Joanna Lumley In the early 1990's I used to empty the bins at Brian Blessed's bungalow in Surrey. Nothing of interest in them, because he was always off mountaineering or acting. Patricia Routledge, because her voice is so irritating. Fernella Fielding just oozed sex-appeal. Even on my "Dougal and the Blue Cat" Magic Roundabout LP of the 1970's. John Hurt for me. My mate did a voiceover with him and JH rocked up and said "We'll have this all wrapped up in 15 minutes I should think!" Nice way of putting down a marker and letting them know he wasn't going to do lots of takes. Also Orson Welles had an unmistakeable voice with such gravitas that he fooled some Yanks into believing Martians were attacking!
Be where you are; otherwise you will miss your life. |

I was watching an old episode of Minder this morning. (Arfur and Terry era). Ray Winstone, as a small-time robber, looked around the age he was when he made Scum. The Lovejoy actor was in it too (Ian McShane ?). But both were instantly recognisable. Brian Blessed completely threw me as a Senior Detective. He was clean-shaven and it wasn't until he opened his mouth (in a non-shouty way) that I recognised who he was. Edited by Forest Hillbilly (28 Aug 2020 2.47pm)

And Clint Eastwood. From the Spaghetti Westerns I was allowed to stay up late for, to the Dirty Harry's and Grand Torino,

James Hayter - Friar Tuck in the Robin Hood with Francis Matthews (Captain Scarlett - another unmistakable voice) in the lead role - he did the voice overs for Mr Kiplings cakes - he was exceedingly good!!! And William Franklin (sssshhhhh you know who!) Peter Falk had a most recognisable voice but never did voice overs, Ronnie Corbett's voice was very tellable. And Willie Rushton - best as Clifford the Dragon in those mouthwash adverts.

On the flip side, I have no idea what Tom Hardy's real voice sounds like. Morgan Freeman Sylvester Stallone is recognisable, unless you're in a room surrounded by deaf people that have taught themselves how to speak...
