Was the £12m that was mentioned on purchase of Sorloth a performance related figure then? I’ve seen so many values I’ve lost track of what we paid for him.

Honestly can't say definitively. Transfers fees are never really released by the clubs now always a 'reported' amount and its not like even if that is accurate it is handed over in a lump sum. Nearly always in some sort of installments with various add ons and provisos. Silly situation as it is then a case of the club recieving the fee having to spend that money in similar deals before they actually get the money, essentially borrowing on future installments.

Wiki says it was a 9mill fee though.

Does seem to be a deal not stacked in our favour.
I suppose it relates to a question of supply and demand , and at the time of the deal there was probably not a great demand for Sorloth’s services.
I have to confess I came away from games where he featured for Palace (admittedly few) thinking I could do better and I’m in my sixties.
He didn’t seem to have a football brain and despite his size he didn’t appear to be able to compete for an aerial ball.
Perhaps it’s harsh to make early judgements.
If he turns out to be a gem we won’t be the first to make mistakes.
Chelsea let De Bruyne and Salah go after all.

I think the De Bruyne and Salah failing at Chelsea were largely because Jose was making a point to the club about signings that he didn't make. He didn't give Moses a look in either, but Conte won the league with him as a wing back

I liked the look of Sorloth but we as a team don't really play progressive football, it's percentage stuff. I'd say we failed to integrate him into our style of play or we didn't play to his strengths, either or. In a better team I think he would do well. It felt like Benteke was top striker, even though he has been far from prolific for us.

Roy has a philosophy of sticking with certain players though you feel that dropping a player would benefit the team more esp during losing runs

Yep, this info was available some time ago. The worst thing about it is, even if they can’t afford to buy him, then provided they have a deal with another club already agreed, they can probably borrow the purchase money to complete the deal with us. It looks like a poorly structured deal from start to finish for Palace, because had Sorloth tanked they would have made sure he didn’t play 50% of games and shipped him back to us. We are the only losers in this.

I dont think you can move twice in one transfer window or register with 3 clubs in a season. If they buy him, then presumably he'd need to be on their books for a year.

Freeman, as DOF, should answer all these questions as it falls within his area of responsibility and Parish should explain why he signed them off!

They'll say they took a £10m gamble on a player with an excellent goal scoring record and potentially a decent future. The manager refused to play him and said he was useless. They tried to get him off the books ASAP, then he turned out to be more successful than anyone wishing the Palace coaching team ever imagined.

It was Roy that thought he was a write off. I think Roy was using him as an excuse to cover his own failings.

This sorry saga simply underlines Roy's many failings, including his masterminding what undoubtedly will be SEVEN defeats in a row, unequalled in our Premiership history.Time to step down and retire gracefully, rather than face the bullet.

I think I posted on another thread about Sorloth but I will add it here as its relevant.

At the time we bought Sorloth it was a choice between him and Jordy Hugill for a 8 to 10mill fee. Hugill actually came down to Palace and discussed terms but the spammers hijacked the deal so we went for Sorloth. Both were considered a risk and were speculative gambles. Personally I think we got the better of the two deals. Hugill has tanked at West Ham and tried to come back home to reki due his career with boro but that didn't really rejuvenate it and he was not a complete regular for boro on loan. Now at QPR and doing better but is unlikely to recuperate anything like the 10mill West Ham paid for him. I think we paid 8 mill for Sorloth. Who struggled and we all saw it and pretty much everyone thought getting him out the club in any capacity was the best thing to do at ghd time. £750,000 loan fee and another 6mill to buy majes for just a 1.25mill loss. Prob acceptable as it was worth a punt. Its only now that he has done well in Turkey peolke are saying its bad. Real case of 20/20 hindsight. And tbh maybe it was never got g to work for him here and he is just better suited to his football in Turkey. It happens.

Spot on, When I watched him play for us I couldn’t believe how bad he looked. I thought we’d been conned. If the chap has gone to improve dramatically then good on him. Every team has players who flopped but moved and turned into better players.

If we sell, are there no sell-on clauses for a % in the deal? I thought this was bog standard and there is always a probability a player increases in value once you sell him, even if you think he is cr*p.

Looking at the rest of the deal, I doubt we were bright enough to put sell on clause in

Agreed like Meyer, these players need to be given more time to adjust to the pace of play in PL. When I last looked at his record for club and country, including European competition games his goal tally, were 26 from 41 games, so he has something. The loan club have option to buy at 7 mil at end of loan period (June 2021). There are no recall options for CP in the deal. According to the press reports other European clubs, including Real Madrid have noticed him and some reports give an estimated value of 20mil. Nothing happens in this club without The approval of Parish, so he is responsible at the end of the day.

This constant belly aching is just getting boring now.

He was pony for us. We cannot simply give any player 'a bit of a run' in the first team while they find their feet as we do not have the quality around them to carry passengers.
We entered into a stupid deal which will lose the club millions but no one at the club is willing to step up and comment on it let alone carry the can. (Me I blame Dougie - he should have been sacked, not for the loan but a contract that gave us no future opt outs)

But its done. Nothing can change it so let's learn and move on.

That old 'learn' chestnut and palace are a bit distant....
