I am only relaying the comments from 'Hawkeye' who stated that it was the first time such an error had occurred in more than 9,000 matches using the system.
I don't know if the French League use 'Hawkeye'.

So which is it?

Do we know whether Hawkeye was ‘obscured’ and couldn’t detect the goal or the goal was correctly detected but there was a failure in the technology to relay it to the referee? Both cannot be right.

I’d be massively concerned if Hawkeye are saying ALL of their cameras were obscured simply because of the goalposts?!? and two players being in the way! The posts are always there and there will be plenty of scenarios when two players are on the goal line...most corners for instance.

I have not heard any official explanation that the issue was a relaying of the information to the referee's watch.

Hawkeye have asserted that views of the cameras were obscured not just by the goalpost but the goalkeeper and defender.Hawkeye uses 14 cameras, 7 pointing towards each goal.

I am not totally 'Au Fait' with the technological intracacies of the system other than it uses 'Triangulation' but the general consensus has been that it's introduction has been a success and a welcome addition.

A crowd reaction was missing, so that Michael Oliver did not get the assistance he would usually receive. Cannot imagine a full Holmesdale Stand no giving the required help. Perhaps supporters panels (a few from each side) could help. COYP

Ironic this is the first failure in it's use in England.

The alternate system that FIFA favoured and was used in Europe had lots of failures not sure if that is still used.

It's hard luck on Sheffield United who seem to get the worst end of VAR decisions. That said I prefer to think of all the correct decisions that Hawkeye has made rather than the one mistake.

I think it’s more of an embarrassment for the system and the rule makers of the game that the VAR officials couldn’t intervene. The whole point of VAR is to rule out serious errors in the game. If anything is clear it is that this was a serious error and a game changing decision. If I was a Blades fan I’d be pretty pissed as that result would have put them above Manure and in the Euro slots.

... and what was the lino doing, has he (or she!) not have a say on these matters as they used to have before GLT?

Excellent point surely the VAR team have seen that the ball was over line?

The referee should have got an error message and then gone to VAR.

Seems VAR isn't allowed to get involved ..

I sure some common sense could have been applied though as it was clearly over the line.

Agree. I like GLT, the biggest issue here is why can VAR not get involved? Surely the ref should be able to ask for assistance if there is some doubt. Very poor.
Villa players knew it was a goal, didn’t they benefit last season when Bielsa insisted his team allowed them to score? I suppose too much is at stake for sportsmanship to kick in
