Still, when the US shot down an Iranian passenger plane back in 1988.....How do you think the Iranians treated it?....and indeed the left of that time? The willingness to accept a double standard for emotive reasons overcomes the rational objectivity of some....who on other topics you'd probably listen to. Edited by Stirlingsays (11 Jan 2020 4.26pm)

I think was a mistake rather like the shooting down of the Dutch airliner in the Ukraine. My guess is like that incident the decision was taking by a fairly low level officer who didn't have the common sense to contact his superiors first. Or if he did they didn't use their common sense. The worry for me about regimes like Iran and the Russian backed rebels is the lack of control and command. Would you trust a shopping mall guard with a gun? In the case of Iran would the revolutionary guard even bother talking to the Iranian elected government before taking that decision, probably not. They see themselves as a power and not subservient to the elected officials. Let us hope some good comes from this.

They were caught red handed and it still took days for them to admit it. They killed over a hundred people & some are saying that their government should be trusted with nuclear capabilities! Good to see student protests against the government taking place.
