Joe Root is a great bat, but useless as captain - tactically inept.

His captaincy will become an issue if we do badly in this series.
Some of his field placing in this test were curious and evidently this left Steve Harmison tearing his hair out on Talksport.

It was an issue in New Zealand and last summer.

Burns out now and likely that Archer is out. May as well just give them the next match.

Chris Silverwood can replace Archer and we have Graham Thorpe and Captain Colly there amongst the coaching staff so I'm sure that one or both of them can fill in for the walking wounded

Zak Crawley, Dom Bess and Ollie Pope come in.

I don't know much about Crawley but I've always been an advocate of Bess and Pope......So batting and spinning wise I'm mostly happy.

Burns seems our only decent opener currently. Archer needs his mojo back. I had posted previously that the pace would be coached out of him. Someone needs to just let him bowl. England's micro managing, of which silly field placings are a part, is pointless. Pick the best players and let them play.

Yet another pathetic and abject batting performance on a good Newlands pitch.
I believe these sentiments are incontrovertible and any fulmination aimed at the team will be fully deserved. My fears have proved prescient.

Considering England 'invented' cricket, the way the test teams have fallen, even Double Sculls as a sport, has a higher standing.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

We are crap at Test cricket for the same reason that only 10% of modern day recruits can make it through Army basic training.

You raise a generation of soft tarts, you get a reduced pool of the right stuff.....the talent will be there as that's genetic but the iron will....the Barringtons and the Boycotts, well there's just less of them.

All the money in the world can't buy you a pair of balls.......Well....you know what I mean.

Too few state schools offer cricket as a properly coached sport.

Just about keeping our nose in front.

SA looking a little lacklustre. Just shows the psychology involved between defending and chasing a lead.

Could be close this one.
