YT, I don't think bandwagon but maybe. we went to Berlin as a family...the only thing my lad was ever gonna enjoy was the football. union were literally the only game in town so I read up on them and then put a lot of effort into getting 2 tickets. Freiburg I did / do love the ethos and history. if it weren't for loyalty to poor bury, they'd be 2nd. I'd not heard of union until then...or had forgotten our friendly v them a few years back.

No offence meant; just teasing, hence the smiley. I loved your reminiscence about the boys' handbook. I attained a fascination for the FA Cup and its history through an article in a Blue Peter annual that I was given for Christmas. From then on, I was hooked, and always dreamed about what it must be like to follow your club all the way to cup glory.

I doubt that many of today's 8 year olds will ever know that the cup went to Blackburn 7 times in 10 years, or that a Scottish club got to two finals (Queen's Park, as I'm sure you recall). When I discovered Subbuteo in the late 60s, I begged my parents to let me buy my own team. Based on the limited stock at the local shop, I chose QPR. Therefore I too had a soft spot for a good few years. That was kicked into touch at the FA Cup quarter-final (1984, without looking it up?) via Bob Hazell's thuggery, unpunished by a home-biased referee, by the dreadfully unfair plastic pitch and by Clive Allen's over-exuberent celebration on scoring the lucky winner. It was one of my top 5 (or bottom 5) sick as a parrot days as a Palace fan. Edited by YT (07 Nov 2019 5.18pm) fantastic. I too had QPR and went through the exact same cycle you describe above. except they made for a great 'villain' team. all my subbuteo teams, especially QPR, would get wrecked by clumsy feet, violent cats, or other random happenstance. fun fact...I had Vince hilaire in subbuteo by getting Peru and painting a blue stripe on a player. Peru are one of my top international sides for that reason.

I put a bit of orange Velcro on the head of a Romania player and got Carlos Valderama, I did another bit of sticking and got George Berry from Wolves
