Working Class parents are real people

Middle Class parents believe in 'democracy', universities, fake smiling, what other people think of the family status and little humour.

aka “I’m completely right and you’re totally wrong”. As I said before, if you’re happy to dish out stereotypes about others, you should be ready to accept them about yourself. Most people aren’t happy to do that.

Middle class are bothered about what people think of them or what they do or their lifestyles.
Working class dont give a feck and you lot can go do one.
That's really the difference.

I’m not even sure what classes are what these days. The lines have definitely blurred in recent years.

I think now these classes have their own sub classes.

To me someone of middle class should be someone like a doctor or bank manager (when that meant something).
Now days there is however also a lower middle class. To me this would be someone who live on a new housing estate and drive a BMW, upwardly mobile but without the breeding and probably only one generation removed from working class stock. Maybe a sales manager or programmer by profession.

Likewise the working class now has a subclass. Chav. This class really has little in common with ‘salt of the earth’ working class who are trying to move forward in life.

Personally I don’t equate income to social class. Status more so but not income or wealth. Accents, manners and attitude are the giveaways.

Interesting stuff.

On a personal level, and I’m actually a bit embarrassed to admit this, but I often feel a bit inadequate around people I deem from a higher class. My wife’s friends and family are all proper middle class and socially I often find evenings a bit awkward. I usually find heavy drinking and a subtle hint of violence helps the evening along.

Is not the dividing line the absence or presence of net curtains?

If accents are the giveaway where does that put people like Steve Parish who is very wealthy but fails the accent test by a large margin

He has working class parents but went to a private school (like my children). Yet apparently there is no "social mobility" in this country.

I think that is a feeling many people have without wanting to admit it. Ex- public schoolboys, for instance, usually have a natural confidence which the rest of us lack to some degree. Doesn’t mean they necessarily know what they’re talking about but it sounds as if they do.
