I would say the team around 2010 created a number of cult heros, born from the effort they put in in trying circumstances, who would develop into pretty much the best side in our history within a few years. Talent is a secondary factor in being a cult hero. Delaney (play off final reaction) Some of our current side would do well to remember these players existed not that long ago and took nothing for granted. Benteke's gone on to be a s*** Alan Lee

Aki Riihilahti Love him nearly as much as our long haired Argentinian. Eric Young. Hard as nails, now an accountant.

I remember him being interviewed after a game and was asked if the tackle he made was late. He replied ‘ No, that was the next one coming early’. Bright genuine character with a great sense of humour unlike most player machines today.

Similarly, what constitutes a legend? Where's the line between cult hero and legend? Jedinak was described by one poster on this thread as a cult hero but for me he's an out and out legend. Of the current lot, Ward a cult hero possibly? Does get a lot of stick for his ability though from some. Rightfully sometimes.
To me a cult hero is someone who may not have been a great, and may well not now be remembered by the greater footballing public, but who endeared themselves to the fans of the club by dint of character and dedication, and who may not even have been universally admired by all fans of a club. A cult is something that has a degree of exclusivity - the worshippers are on the inside, everyone else on the outside. It's a sort of almost unsung admiration,a secret fan club, and perhaps in these days of social media where everyone can express their opinion, and where the media rake over everything and focus in on players and their achievements, achieving cult status is more difficult simply because nothing passes under the radar anymore.

Excellent summation.

John Jackson I could go on and certainly previous nominations are just as worthy. Obviously many different players conjure up fond memories for us fans. Perhaps it’s more a personal thing rather than a collective agreement. Edited by Caleagle (03 Sep 2019 2.44am)

Some good responses on here! I’d add Alan Pardew (as a player). Wasn’t great but got cult hero status after the semi final goal. Micky Droy and Trevor Aylott also had a kind of cult status, for different reasons.
