He used to play cricket for Surrey in the summer during closed season. In this day and age that sounds nuts but it wasn't unheard of in those days.

True. The scunthorpe centre half used to play cricket in the summer back in the day.

Ian Botham was his name

Joe Hart was an outstanding young cricketer for Shrewsbury CC and Steve Ogrizovic used to play for Shropshire.

Denis Compton? Mark Lawrenson? Our Vince was no mug with the bat either, and so apparently was the Forest Hill Fishmonger, another string to his bow, and he could probably play that too

Forest Row maybe, he worked for a chap I played golf with near East Grinstead.

He went on to be a fishmonger after he stopped playing.

Didn't David Payne join the Police at some stage after he finished his playing career ?

Club cricket maybe, not county as far as I know.

I guess you'd better correct his daughter then Mr knowitall as that's what she told me. I personally have zero interest in cricket so would not be able to confirm either way (and wouldn't care either) but I see you clearly know more about it that David Payne's own daughter so smug it up there fella!

I always think of Robbie Keane - he seemed to have been a boyhood fan of every club he went to.

He may have played club cricket, but not county I'm pretty certain. Steve Kember was a good club cricketer too.
