Well it's going to happen now I am not convinced it's good value for money however strategically we need a high speed rail network that covers the whole country, not just North South. The line between London and Birmingham may not really be required but if eventually you can get a high speed train from Scotland that connects to the high speed network in Europe then I guess that makes sense. The key thing here is the government has to deliver on the Northern powerhouse upgrades such as Manchester to Leeds that must also happen. Big Gamble for Boris.

No more prison for offenders any more, its free labour on the chain gangs. Bring the army in to oversee them and shoot them if they try and escape. Let's get Britain moving again. Is that too radical?

Personally I view a high speed rail link from the bottom and top of the country as a no brainer for a first world country. From what I see, HS2 isn't even that ambitious. How that is achieved, costs and otherwise is a separate matter.....but there needs to be a fast, cheap, safe method of mass transportation if a modern country calls itself first world. There are social and security negatives, however these are separate questions. Edited by Stirlingsays (12 Feb 2020 12.10pm)

There was a case 30 years ago but not any more. This is no more than an excuse to filter money into the economy to try and grow it which is a diffrent question altogether.

It's a line that goes though several "key marginal constituencies" and a "brave" political decision. Best to get a inquiry in place before an election and ensure the outcome of it is announced afterwards to minimise the impact on votes. Phase 1 on its own offers the lowest benefit. It may even have been better to start in the north and work their way down, but it's been assessed as a stand alone project. For phase 1 land had been bought and construction has started. Stopping halt way through would cost loads and deliver £0 economic benefit. Might as well finish it, especially if some of the funding is borrowed money from private sources. The real benefits will come when phases 2 and beyond are added. Smart move to win votes in the north and to protect countryside constituencies by Boris. Meanwhile Corbyn let the RMT strike in the run up to the GE. Would be better to start building it in from north to south as that's where the biggest need for new infrastructure is, but we are where we are now. Also. Don't build anything to Scotland unless the SNP get ousted.

I think your technology point is always a valid one but it's like the 'when should I upgrade my PC' question. There isn't such a thing as a definitive answer (though I'd say for PCs always wait till after the Xbox/PS5 console releases at Xmas) The alternative transportation technologies that people like Musk are looking into are very hit and miss and may not be suitable for our geography....in the meantime we don't have a fast method of connecting the country. Once the connections and infrastructure are there it can always bn used for later technology....just like roman roads made way for main ones. But I take all your points.....I think being against HS2 is a perfectly legitimate position....I suppose I'm in the....'we need to upgrade' camp. Edited by Stirlingsays (12 Feb 2020 2.43pm)

I still think you need the means to quickly get from top to bottom for a first world country but I won't deny you're part of good arguments against.

Funny how the Victorians could do this and more easily. And entrepreneurs would pay for it. That's PFI and it's not working very well for most councils who took it on.
