Read up on the infinitesimally slim chance of life having come to exist on this planet, and you'll soon conclude that there is no likelihood whatsoever of any life form existing close enough to the Earth to be able to get here, fly around a bit and then shoot off somewhere else. Bill Bryson expresses it fairly well in layman's terms in one of his books, buy there are more learned versions. This does make sense to me, but at the same time there is likely life on millions of planets, and as such I'd imagine that the instances of two planets with life on next to each other would not be unthinkably uncommon as opposed to a random location. Conditions stand a greater chance of being similar. Not that I'm saying that's true of us, as it likely isn't, but it offers a reason for why life forms encountering other life elsewhere may have happened countless times.

That does not mean that we are not being visited. There are almost infinite possibilities. The problem with this subject is firstly, the loony factor. If you talk about it, you are likely to be branded a loon, and there is no doubt that the subject does attract some nut cases.

can someone please explain aliens' fixation with forcing metal probes up people's bottoms, is it just a Martian thing, do they all do it or only certain types of alien? I can't find any sensible answers on the web If you don't want to wait for aliens to show up, you can always do it yourself Superfly

Erm, we don't actually understand them yet. We are only scraping the surface of the quantum mechanics and I'm sure that there is plenty more to discover yet. A very presumptuous attitude, if I may say so. No less presumptuous than your own.

No less presumptuous than your own. I don't presume to know everything. Nobody is bonkers for keeping an open mind. You hear religious types justifying the possibility of God by saying that you can't disprove his existence but having insufficient knowledge of the existence of something makes it no more or less likely. In the religious case, it is certainly a spurious argument because we can trace the origins of monotheism back and see how it evolved from something completely different.

Thanks. You saved me the trouble of replying. In addition, the concept that some far-off advanced being can somehow overcome the physical mechanisms that have driven the universe for 16 billion years (give or take) is simply bonkers. Edited by YT (16 Jul 2019 7.51pm) The Drake equasion would suggest the odds are far higher than you give credit for. Also to assume we're somehow the top of the evolutionary chain is a touch arrogant. Granted, I have no evidence that alien life does exist (other than in Br13hton) but i'm certainly open to the idea and theories that others have mentioned. Ancient Aliens (whilst a bit bonkers) certainly is a thought provoking series offering plausable suggestions. The Unacknowledged (available on Netflix) is also an interesting film based on testimony including the ex Canadian Defence Minister who openly states that there have been visitations and Goverments are interracting with them.
