Our player recruitment is piss poor and generally has been for years. I'd still argue we haven't brought in a really decent striker since we won promotion.

Every year it's the same story, I have a heart full of hope when the the transfer window creaks open and then find myself desperately praying for a miracle in the final week of the window. I never learn, it's like constantly going back to an ex who always cheats on you.

Leaving it until the last minute never helps us. Max Meyer's interview today specifically mentions how he struggled after failing to have a pre-season with us, we're forcing our signings to play catch up. It's reflected in our results as well as we're usually in the bottom 3 after 8 games until they learn how to play together.

We seem to leave it until the last minute to try and get a couple of million discount on players, yet how much have we lost in prize money due to this approach?

After a very modest season in terms of signings, we actually desperately need a good window this time. A right back, centre back, winger and striker are all imperatives. Yet what is the betting we leave most of it until the end again, if we do it at all? Happy to be quoted and ritually abused if we do pull our fingers out, will be worth it.

Really piss poor recruitment, list our best xi subs and see how poor that recruitment is, we're 2-3 players away from a very good prem team that we know can go toe to toe with anyone in the league.

Anyone would think this was football forum the way they all go on.

All I can say is thank goodness you’re here.

Are we the only club fans to do this? In another thread I thought people were saying Arsenal do it to a ridiculous level.

Bournemouth are the role model for recruitment, Wilson, King, Fraser, Brooks quality, all bought cheap with sell on values and two players highlighted and brought in already, while we constantly drag out backside.

I have always questioned Freedman’s appointment as DOF.
This is not because of a dislike of him but because he had no experience of the role and there was nothing to suggest he was qualified to fulfil the role.
When asked about the appointment Parish said it was because he felt he could trust Freedman and that he believed Freedman would always act in Palace’s interests as opposed to other candidates who may push their own agenda.
Fair enough to a degree, but still doesn’t deal with lack of experience and qualifications.
My view is that Freedman has managed to get a lot of players off the books so has been reasonably successful at wage reduction.
However, there is nothing to suggest an improvement in scouting or the establishment of a proper network to enable us to exploit the transfer market in the way for example Bournemouth, Watford, Southampton and even Brentford do.
The windows since Freedman’s appointment have been at best below average and there is nothing to suggest that this likely to change.

I don't doubt that doing the actual deal, and getting people to sign is proper difficult.
My issue with the scouting network, is that we dont find players who we want to deal with in the first place. We only ever seem to be going for already-known players, old ones or cast offs - or piggy-backing off the back of another clubs interest.

When So'ton bought Mane, VVD etc, how many other clubs were looking at them? They went out and found the hidden gems.

They cost Southampton a total of some £23 Mill.Southampton got around £110 Mill when they were sold.

At Southampton the Director of Football Operations, Ross Wilson, overseas around 50 scouts. He chairs a 5 person recruitment committee which includes the heads of analysis and youth recruitment, and which meets regularly.
His team profile prospective signings on technical and psychological levels and at any one time could have 20 players for each position which they whittle down to 3 or 4.

Saints are serial regulation battlers though, doesn't seem to do them much good !

There has been a plethora of opinion which states that if one keeps selling one's best players it can have an adverse affect.
Southampton have sold Van Dijk, Mane,Walcott,Oxlade-Chamberlain,Lallana,Tadic,Wanyama,Clyne,Shaw,Lovren etc etc.

Agreed - nothing wrong with players with elite-level potential seeing us as a good stepping stone... if it means we get 2-3 years out of them before they move on, it’s worthwhile.

I have similar doubts about ‘forcing’ Zaha to honour his contract if he really wants to go - what message does than send to any young player we are trying to recruit who has ambitions to play in the champions league?

The Zaha situation is simply down to money, he has a long contract, Arsenal are not matching our valuation (to the point of a incredibly meagre offer, designed only to unsettle the player) if they matched our valuation then I’m sure no one would stand in Zaha way and let him leave.

Willo, if you're going to plagiarise the work of others (without giving them credit), in this case the Guardian's David Hytner, at least make the effort to get the spelling correct; it's "oversees" not "overseas".
