Allow the west to continue towards the Looney left and we are guaranteed to get a Putin in power eventually. Good.

That'll be a dark time and definitely a world recession. I'm not so sure what's going to happen here....but I know there is considerable malcontent, which is only going to grow. Edited by Stirlingsays (29 Jun 2019 7.26pm)

Edited by Stirlingsays (29 Jun 2019 7.26pm) There we can see at least part of the problem. When those who currently form Trump's "base" are regarded as "normies" and Putin can gather support for words that sound good to their ears, something is wrong. When those people have guns they are prepared to use and that is also regarded as normal something is very wrong. It has to be an education failure, combined with a cultural history that cause a lag in the USA's ability to keep pace with a changing world in terms of societal development. Fortunately we don't have the gun threat and we are generally better educated about the values of social democracy, not though that would be obvious from reading this site. We don't therefore face such extreme challenges so when the temporary rise in populist sentiment has faded after Brexit, and the Trump era is over, we can resume our steady path towards the fair and decent social democracy we have gradually been easing towards during my lifetime. Putin stirring the brown stuff can be ignored. Edited by Wisbech Eagle (30 Jun 2019 5.48am)

Apart from Trump’s America and Thatcher’s Britain being in long term decline before they took over, I don’t see the similarity. You can just as easily say Bliar and Brown were just as or more to blame. Thatcher eventually got everyone back to work, apart from pockets of the country. New labour paid people to not work and claim incapacity benefits long term. They then spent all they could to the extent that when an inevitable recession came in the economic life cycle Brown thought he’d eliminated for good, there was little borrowing left for anything more after some banks were bailed out. While that was going on new labour encouraged millions of east Europeans to come and work where our young people could’ve and should’ve been trained. The working classes fought back in the Brexit referendum. Thatcher is seen as evil and cthe cause of everything, whereas new labour get off lightly because they mean well. Well that’s if you don’t look closely, and what about housing and housing market reforms? Nothing. It was all about power and appealing to all income and wealth groups, which is why we ended up skint and paying for it now. They’re all good and bad.

If we could have today's technology I suspect plenty of people would prefer that. Statistically both UK females and men were happier and society was socially far more cohesive. Modern feminism and other social freedoms have done considerable damage to the traditional family model.....and especially females. Social liberalism isn't without cost.

It shouldn't be promoted as equal to the traditional family model and especially not to children.....and that is currently happening. Birth control.....when it refers to abortion is just a nicer way of referring to the killing of the unborn child. 'Universal suffrage'.....initially a good thing.....but on average women are more empathic as they are designed to deal with and raise children and hence they universally vote majority left....this brings in more social liberalism....which isn't always a good thing. The death penalty was only removed because the state made mistakes due to poorly constructed rule sets and procedures....the Christie and the Derek Bentley cases spring to mind. However, when guilt is certain it is an appropriate outcome for certain severe cases.....hence it needs to be used sparingly....as in Japan. Edited by Stirlingsays (30 Jun 2019 12.09pm)

I read your post, you just don't get it. Still I knew that anyway. You think things are just going to continue as they are, which is a mistake made many times over in history. For many people what's going to happen is as obvious as the nose on their faces.....not least our security services. The pressure is steadily building and it's pretty much due to the changes that people like yourself regard positively. Edited by Stirlingsays (30 Jun 2019 1.06pm)

Edited by Stirlingsays (30 Jun 2019 1.06pm) I am not actually in Cornwall right now. I am in the Philippines where for the last 20 years I have spent several months each year. This though is a brief visit. Spending time in a very different culture does though bring it' rewards on how you see your own. I definitely don't think things are "going to continue as they are"! Everything evolves and changes as a response. The difficulty I have with the arguments that you and others here try to make is that they are not evolutionary at all. They are regressive and seek to return us to a time and to conditions that no longer exist and cannot be recreated. Globalisation is a fact. It's just part of the tide of history which cannot be resisted. So we must work with it to our advantage or be consumed by it. Just seeing problems doesn't produce answers. If the answers that are proposed make no sense and are undeliverable populist clap trap then all we do is waste the time we could be better spending swimming with the tide rather than against it. Our security services see the threats OK. Not just from Islamic fundamentalism but also from far right wing terrorism and the cyber warfare coming from Russia and China. I don't think they have much sympathy for populist movements that seek to take advantage of any of such threats. Incidentally I spent the last two days with a guy who used to live in New York, has met Trump and had some business dealings with him. More of that at the appropriate time.
