I don’t think Allardyce took the p1ss out of us. He wanted to get out of his contract because he didn’t want to cover for Parish’s previous mistakes in the transfer market which have effectively hamstrung is since. Just look at how little we’ve spent on transfers since and will do until we sell one of our prized assets. We took Sakho on which was big but he was in the team on loan before the perm signing, and Kouyate. Nothing else of note on the field.

FWIW I do think the £45 mil we spent was necessary. If we bought a left back 6 months before then we may not have bought pva and schlupp and conserved £10 mil and £40k of part of one their £60k wages by waiting and/or scouting more thoroughly instead of at high cost out of the Panini album again.

Most of our successful managers are required to paper over our poor scouting, transfer policy and inflated wage bill, which is why I accept the current football while I try to keep my eyes open and to not start snoring.

Did Allardyce lie about why he wanted to leave or not, it’s quite simple without made up theories.

He left as soon as the window ended without breaking any terms in his contract. I don’t know what anyone’s problem with that is. He didn’t even buy any cloggers or one trick pony long ball merchants. It’s not his fault Parish is how he is and what’s happened for so long with player and squad management. I’d have a beer with Allardyce instead of being an idiot over it and him probably laughing at anyone who would be, like he did at pathetic divers when be was stood in his technical area. I liked the exaggerated one at one player.

Unlike Sam, not all managers pack their bags and scuttle off in a huff because of the inability of the board to spend money. Benitez and Ashley spring immediately to mind.

Allardyce is greedy, pure and simple. He just bounces around from team to team, uses ‘brand Allardyce style football’ which lasts about 18 months before being found out and then moves on to save another team for another big payday.

He is ambitious but ultimately I don’t believe he is that talented. Roy has done as good a job with less resources and as a result we have found some stability albeit at the expense of some dire play at times. Would we have done better with Sam still at the club? No I don’t think so, we would still finish exactly where we deserve to be which is mid table. Sam was found out as soon as he went to a club that demands better than average results ie: Everton.

Spending money has got nothing to do with the relationship between manager and chairman, it is to do with the accounts. Clearly ours aren’t great at the moment which is why SP needed a manager who could manage without spending a bundle (enter Roy). Where we have gone wrong however is wasting money on players like Mutch Jach, Erdal and Sorloth and quite a few others I have thankfully forgotten about.

So, in a nutshell it’s how we spend our limited resources that needs improvement at our club and now we just need to know whether that is Dougie, Roy or SP’s responsibility so we can direct our angst accordingly!

I thought we played some of our best football under Allardyce. We played Arsenal off the park in a 3-0 win, beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield, beat Chelsea 2-1.

He spent a fair bit of money but I think the majority of his signings have been a success and still doing it for us today.

He was the best manager for getting the best out of Benteke. I'd have him back in a heartbeat if he was committed to staying at the club for a more longterm project.

I also think his repuatation of defensive hoofball is unfair when you think back to teams like his Bolton team of JayJay, Campo, Djorkaeff etc. where they played some great football at times.

You make some good points, most of which I agree with but in the end Allardyce is a mercenary. He 'retired' to wriggle out of any commitments to Palace, hoping a bigger job would come up. It did at Everton but they hated him.
He'd only come back to Palace for a huge contract. Even then his head would be turned if a bigger club came calling plus he'd demand money for transfers that we simply don't have. Its a no

we saw with both Pulis and Sam that their perceived image is way off the reality, both have used direct football when it was the most workable option but their decisions re tactics and personnel with us showed their astuteness and sophistication as coaches - Everton fans were grossly unfair to Sam, was at Goodison when his Everton played us off the park last season (we had RLC and Wilf missing tbf), Freedman was off the mark when he described West Ham's football as 'long ball' when Sam was in charge there - Sam got the funds to keep us up, the fact that he knew there wouldn't be much more money coming was no doubt a big part of his decision to leave regardless of his relationship with Parrish, if he were still here I think we'd be in roughly the same place, maybe a place or two higher but it's irrelevant to speculate because we would have quite a different squad, I don't think Jimmy Mac would still be here for example.

Totally agree, both terrific managers, played great football under both if them, its a miracle pulis kept us up that season. surprised a prem team hasnt snapped him up.

The Arsenal game was a massive highlight but there were a couple of months of utter sh1t - home defeats against Swansea, Sunderland and Burnley.

Watford and Middlesbrough at home we won but were truly shocking games where we barely managed a shot. Chelsea and Liverpool were backs against the wall and came at a point where we looking down the barrel at relegation.

I thought Allardyce initally understimated the job and the extent that the rot had set in under Pardew

Anyone comparing that season to this one is having a laugh.

You’d be right if the evidence wasn’t there that our scouting has been poor for a long time, so not only do we pay lots for well known players but we have to pay them loads to come to little Palace with the embarrassingly small changing rooms and showers. You can also include chopping and changing football strategy back and forth and thus having to fire managers in December, again partly because the summer preparation and transfers have been disappointing and not researched.

Yes Rudi, agreed, hence my last paragraph. We quite clearly have limited resources, spending them wisely is of paramount importance but that is what we probably do worst as a club.

You haven't a shred of evidence that anything you've said is true

I struggle to see what’s so wrong with it anyway. A club can’t plan, scout and spend effectively so tempt someone in who can save their & rses who they’re aware knows what it takes financially to cement your place in the division for definite, but the club looking at the spreadsheets in private know they’re not going to be able to give him anywhere near what he knows is required in 5-9 months time.

What is he meant to do? Turn the offer down? It’s when serious and respected people bang on Parish’s door that he knows he must spend the money. It’s when we spend excessively on areas we haven’t planned for in the 2-3 years we knew it was coming, and that’s happened a lot in 6-7 years.

I’m sorry but the running of the club has been like a condensed version of over and underspending in U.K. government, only at Palace we’re not changing power.

We’re lucky and Parish is lucky the one person in this country at this level is willing to take it on at 71 because it’s a fairytale end to his career at his local club he supported growing up. Otherwise you can make no mistake that we’d be screwed or be selling Zaha under more unfavourable circumstances. AWB who can tell because we may have been relegated before he made his debut.

It’s just unfortunate the football is so boring and cautious all of the time, and at 1-0 down until 89 minutes gone. Some of the time it’s necessary but not all of the time. I like the football under Roy when there’s something to watch. The football under sam was pretty good. It had excitement on the attack and had people competing in their own battles to a high level.
