No disrespect intended, but what does that sentence mean?

I wasn't at Hillsborough but I was at Stockport, waiting listening to the radio for the final whistle to go at Huddersfield.

For those who accuse me of "lack of ambition", as far as the top tier is concerned there is top 6 and the rest. there is currently a 15 point gap between 6th and 7th place. We are "the rest". Burnley finished 7th last season and almost got relegated this. Southampton finished 8th twice and have struggled since. Everton spent £150 million trying to break into the top 6 and ended up appointing Allardyce to stop them getting relegated.

It is impossible for a normal club to compete with Emirati oil money, Russian Oligarch money, etc etc. The top 6 all have stadiums seating 60,000 give or take, and unlimited reserves of cash to burn. This is now working its way down the division, with huge outside money at clubs like Bournemouth even.

It is not a lack of ambition that says "we are not going to break into the top 6". This is a golden time to be a Palace fan so enjoy it and stop whinging.

I suspect that people's views on this will vary according to their age and length of support for Palace. There will be some who have no experience of being in the top division until this spell. It is hugely understandable that they would like us to kick on.

All I would say to them is look what happened to many of the clubs of our size who thought they were "established", then tried to "kick on", such as Charlton or Bolton.

For those of us with a longer perspective (I have been watching since 1963) this is the first time we have had so many years in the top flight. Previously we had four years from 69-73, being thrashed every week by other London teams especially (watching The Big Match with Brian Moore was a nightmare). We had the occasional high, such as beating Man Utd 5-0 in Dec 72, but we still got relegated that season, and the one after for good measure.

We then had two seasons with "the team of the 80s", so tragically ruined and broken up by Venables, and slipped down two divisions again.

The late 80s/early 90s spell was a highlight, Wright/Bright, cup final, finishing 3rd, almost a team full of internationals, but we still slipped away after 4 seasons.

After that the yoyo existence, up/down/up down etc .

So, we have now had six full seasons in the top flight, and this season have beaten four of the top ten away from home. We won at Manchester City, the moneybags team, the only team to take even a point from there. We won at Arsenal, for the first time in 25 years. I know the home form has been disappointing, but this is nirvana compared with the past.

Be careful what you wish for, and enjoy it whilst you have it.

Thanks for reminding me of all my suffering since 1972!

One small correction though...the bit in bold isn't right. We haven't been in the 'third tier' since promotion from Div 3 to Div 2 in 1976/77.
