Not insults, hyperbole, nor invective. thanks. Fact : The World University Rankings see the americans go from strength to strength. But London is still important. Chicago has a good university but the city itself is nearly sinking in a sea of debt and decay.

I’ve lived my whole life in London, aside from 3 years at University, and I can’t see myself leaving any time soon; I still love it. Can’t agree at all with the assessment that it’s ‘fallen’. It’s interesting to read all this talk of how all these dangerous ghettos have formed - there are countless areas which are infinitely safer and more desirable than even 10 years ago; Brixton, Peckham, Lewisham, Elephant & Castle have all been gentrified beyond recognition, and appear to be continuing to do so. When you say these areas have gentrified, what has really happened is that they have had an influx of middle class white people. It's the places where the former residents have been dispersed to that will now have problems.

I’m a local person who owns and lives in a high rise block in Lewisham, so I don’t particularly agree with your assessment. The majority of my neighbours are British. I don’t quite get the point on the number of dwellings in SE; in light of the housing issues, isn’t that a good thing? The shops/restaurants will come; it takes serious time for an area to change to that extent; Lewisham in another 20 years will be unrecognisable - you’re already seeing a load of these trendy sorts of pubs/bars and cafes opening up in Lewisham, assuming that’s what you mean by character. The residential investment only really kicked into gear in the last 5 years or so. When I said local I meant that many of these places have been bought by people who work in Canary Wharf and socialise in that area or central London. 2 former colleges who live in the block by Deptford DLR admitted they had never shopped in Deptford. Lewisham is becoming a commuter city, get up DLR to work go out uptown, home to bed. It doesn't really benefit the local economy. And the council has made a complete horlicks of the traffic flow in and around the high street which doesn't hep either. I hope you are right about bars and restaurants and quality shops but for now if you want that you go to Blackheath or Greenwich.

I lived in Newham for 14 years, a borough which identified 16% of the residents as White British in the last census. Can’t say I noticed many advantages to the increased vibrancy of the area.

i always thought the 'Benefit Cap' would move unproductive elements out of London and off to places like Stoke-on-Trent. thus bolstering the London housing supply and hence its labour supply. certainly West Norwood is far more gentrified now than 25 years ago. But that was when the telly news described the local Building Society as having the highest number of armed robberies per year ( 20+ robberies if i recall correctly). i always wondered why the staff there looked so jumpy when i reached into my jacket to get a chequebook. You’ve basically described me there It will come with time; there are already certain restaurants and bars popping up in Lewisham/Deptford which are packed with professionals every night. I sold my car within a year of moving to Lewisham which tells you all you need to know about the traffic. Waste of time. Edited by EverybodyDannsNow (13 Mar 2019 6.32pm)

Aren’t all the white middle class supposed to be running away?

The 'fall of London' has not come with bombs and the sound of tanks rolling into Trafalgar Square, it is a steady pervasive creep. Britain as a whole will go the same way as immigrant populations outbreed us and slowly make more demands and dictate our politics to an increasing extent. As I have said before. We are the Neanderthals in this scenario. It is about sheer numbers and the train of migrants will never stop. It seems as if politicians have already surrendered to the certainty of the extinction of the European.

What you are talking about is different. You are talking about the middle class taking over previously working class areas...Something almost as bad....Anyway something that just pushes the problem elsewhere. London is falling because demographics don't lie. You'll be pushed out eventually because you are the minority in London......probably when some more lefty than neo liberal government gets in. never existed , a south london stereotype by writers who didn't have a clue , only fools and horses never really reflected the south london i grew up in and live in . So you never had stuff falling off the back of lorries in your area? This has been happening since the dockyards were big business. No market traders or happy go lucky characters who either didn’t have a job to ‘live’ or had stuff on plus collecting dole, with possibly lots of days spent in the pub or in and out of it, with some ‘business’ done there too? There may not have been many people identical to Del boy or the other characters but there would’ve been plenty who shared some of his lifestyle and characteristics.
