Ha ha you are funny There is one less multilingual people on the planet than the British and that is the Americans. Brits walk into a tourist tat shop and say "Do you speak English?" Then they carry on speaking in English without waiting for the answer. The Americans are the same except they omit to ask the question altogether. It goes without saying that there is a gulf of difference between learning to say please and thank you and learning to speak a language properly (which takes years). However, most locals will appreciate any effort made by a foreigner - especially a Brit or a Yank, whose reputations precede them - to learn at least some of their language; and they will generally forgive some confusion over the difference between ser and estar, the odd dative case after a German preposition with a verb of motion, or a past participle in French which doesn't agree with its preceding direct object.

That is a benefit to the tat shop owner that a tourist is actually going in there then.

To be fair learning a 2nd language or English is important for most foreigners, whenever i've met foreigners working here their English is bang on, you go into Pret where most are foreign their English is spot on. Over here we don't teach our kids languages, it's usually optional. All our Brits who live in Spain might learn a few basics but they won't speak proper Spanish because most people there speak English So i'm sorry, you're initial point is not valid

Huge swathes of Americans speak a second tongue. Primarily Spanish.

Yes but would the Umbembweh tribe from Swaziland forgive you if you clicked twice instead of once with the roof of your mouth and the back of your tongue if they clicked good morning first and you told them (accidentally mind) you wanted to bugger their youngest daughter, I don't think so, these things are universal, the innuits of the Allutian Islands would take great umbrage if you replied with one of their 32 different words for whale droppings when they merely asked the time during the hours of the midnight sun. Do your research Chateau before you come on here presuming the sensibilities of non-English speakers. all a bit daily mail isn't it?
