The Charlie Chan detective movies always had white men such as Christopher lee and Peter Ustanov playing the chinaman and Lon Chaney Jr playing an indian in Hawkeye.

Efa. Pre 2000 there was no unwritten law that women and people of colour or disability or GLBTQ etc had to appear in prominent, positive roles. That said, not sad to see the back of eye rolling yessum "darkies", blatant depictions of child sexuality, women as little more than f**k bags and the lost art of "yelowing-up". Whether that be Edward G Robinson as the Hatchet Man, Christopher Lee as fu man chu, flora Robson and robert morley both playing Chinese emperors and didn't john Wayne play Genghis Khan? A few months ago I saw a terrible movie with a stellar cast called murder by death which included peter sellers playing a chinese detective which made benny hill's stooped iriot character seem like a sensitive portrayal. That would not be made.

I imagine most of the 70’s Hammer movies and monster movies that involved ladies like Valerie Leon and Caroline Munro wearing skimpy outfits would be deemed too sexist. 70s tv series that were made into films like Steptoe and On The Buses would be hit for the same reason, as well as using expressions like poof and queer.

I have zero problems with all those....I regard those generations as far better than this one.....even if the baby boomers pulled the ladder up (though in truth it was their politicians who did) As for women in movies now....I can't watch them without feeling I'm being preached at. I remember watching Aliens when it came out and enjoying the Ripley character without that annoying 'Mary Sue' element or 'strong woman' requirement being so evident......If they made the first Alien now the #metoo mob would want to know why she wasn't the commander of the spaceship. Some of the Tom and Jerry cartoons are banned pick your reason as to why? Colour, offensive to large people, cruelty to animals, violence in children's programmes etc. They'll be going after Scooby Doo next. I've got a big box of Tom and Jerry DVDs which is prefaced with a notice about some of the attitudes portrayed being wrong then and now but it would be no less wrong to pretend that they didn't exist by airbrusing them out of the boxed set. Prejudices are common human faults and it is the flaws in characters that many authors down the ages have exploited to make their stories. It's pretty much the whole point of literature and, therefore, of arts from theatre through opera, film and comedy to the modern soap opera. Unfortunately some people think that portraying bad behaviour is the same thing as condoning or even promoting it. These people are idiots.

Trouble is it doesn't work both ways. A British black actor played one of Shakespeare's English kings for the RSC, cue admiring comments from the critics and luvvies, diversity etc. So it's OK for a black person to play a white role but god help you if you cast a white person in Othello. Zulu. Bloody good film that. Quite historically accurate for a Hollywood movie as well.
