Could it be that they are just higher quality? From a watcher's or listener's perspective that is indeed the case. The BBC is the training ground for most of the top TV stations, so they must be doing something right. The BBC as an educational source and provider of entertainment for a relatively small fee is great in principle but it is infested by liberal/Lefties and seems to have given up any pretense of balance. BBC2 now seems to be for minorities, but In fairness, it is not the biggest culprit. Channel 4, for the most part, is even more minority obsessed and ITV news is a disgrace. It is just a Left wing propaganda machine.

I can remember a time when the BBC offered foreign language programming, adult education (Bob Hoskins) and the Open University to name but a few. Today with the option of multiple channels where is the Education channel? The BBC should be offering the nation a 24 x7 one linked to the Open University for some parts of the day. It could also be used for Adult Education which has shamefully been cut and to teach English as a second language. I would rather abolish the license fee but if my tax dollars are going to be spent I would rather the BBC repositions itself as an educator than reality TV station.

the Social Justice warrior, looney leftie namby-pamby agenda of the BBC has become tiresome. the only time i have watched the BBC in recent years was the morning of the Brexit vote earthquake. All the smug smarmy Politically Correct luvvie-darlings having a cry and a meltdown was pure comedy gold. They looked geniunely shocked that there was a real world out there beyond the gates of their vegetarian-organic-freerange-fairtrade-gender neutral-halal/kosher-quorn-multicultural-multidisability-multiSexualOrientation-recycling-multiseed canteen. its like Nigel Farage walked into their canteen and said 'sausage, egg & chips with me Pint of Ale, ta Darling..ps nice t1ts''

There have been people in the BBC who have actually tried to implement that......and their vision didn't win out. Let's look at Newsnight for example.....how is the 40 percent of conservatives represented by that programme?.....Indeed, outside of 'This Week' (which still have significant left wing and centralist representation) how is that 40 percent represented by the BBC? Sorry...but when it comes to the choice of stories and the slant of coverage....The BBC thinks it's the 'Guardian'.....pretty much all the way down. The BBC lost its mantle as an unbiased actor a long long time ago. Edited by Stirlingsays (19 Sep 2018 3.18pm) Good job you aren't trying to ridicule it then. As I said earlier, this post is a classic example of people politicising rather than being factually based.

Private companies could also take over some of the radio stations, for example. Edited by Penge Eagle (19 Sep 2018 3.14pm) Right, it should be in private hands as they are always more efficient Just like the health care system.

I don't know whether they would be more efficient but why do we need taxpayers money for commercial radio like Radio 1 and 2? I would rather the money is spent on local radio / minority interests / education.

For radio, i.e. simply talking rather than producing audio and visual TV content. And as a percentage of their overall TV budget less than 6% on childrens TV is hardly an overspend, seeing as all children can watch it. Whereas the more than 3% of the overall TV budget spent on S4C for the 300,000 fluent Welsh speakers is not value for money.

As for 'politicising', I could provide many examples of how the BBC isn't anything like objective in terms of a left/right balance.....there are whole websites devoted to it. Attempting to dismiss the criticisms of it as 'politicizing' does nothing to address the criticisms of this organisation. I have no objections to a TV channel that views itself as the 'Guardian' in terms of its political and social engineering coverage......However, that loses all legitimacy when it's on the public purse.

One example, the BBC Asian Network could still work just as well (maybe even better) as a private company which would be a saving on the licence fee. Edited by Penge Eagle (19 Sep 2018 5.21pm)

You could maybe view it as an investment for the future. Apparently 1/2m people speak Welsh in Wales, leaving aside Canada and Patagonia Many Welsh schools now teach primarily in Welsh. This could be the beginning of a takeover. Our culture being usurped by an alternative culture that is sneaking in under the radar...
