Once missed a Ryan Air flight which was cancelled anyway by the time I got to the airport. They still charged me for missing the cancelled flight before allowing me to get on the next plane.

Yep, missed a flight from New York back to London with my mate. We were spending Sunday afternoon drinking in lower Manhattan, with our flight at around 6.30pm from Newark. Got talking to some Geordie girls in the bar and stretched it out until we had to go.

Could not get a taxi for love nor money around the area. Ended up going back into the bar to carry on drinking with Geordies.

Tried again to get a taxi to Newmark, knowing we had missed our flight. Still could not get one, so ended up in a tiny bar somewhere. Ended up in there until late.

Still could get a taxi outside, went back inside. Told the barman and he said "I can call you one". Oh ffs, we could have done that earlier.

So end up going to JFK. Now we are at the wrong airport on the wrong day. No flights until the morning, do slept on the airport floor.

Went to customer services when it opened. The bloke on the desk thought it was hilarious, and he said if it was up to him, he would give us the flights. However we needed to goto the check in supervisor, who apparently was a bit of dragon. He said, just blitz her with information. Fair play to my mate, he has the gif of the gab and he got so confused at 5am she just gave in and put us on standby.

We ended up getting a flight back for free.

Would not happen these days.

Great stories keep them coming

In 2003 me my wife and 18 month old son got the date of departure mixed up as we were flying just after midnight we had missed a flight from Bangkok to London via Helsinki with finn air.
We raced to the airport in the morning and they managed to squeeze us on a flight that evening and charged us £50 quid administration fee.. We were apologising profusely and they were really lovely and they said it happens, they said when we saw you had not checked in the night before we were worried the baby was unwell or there was a big problem.

Thanks to finn air and there kind treatment as me and the wife were worried it was going to cost us a lot of money...

AQ few years ago I missed the last flight back from Edinburgh to Gatwick having been up there all day in business.
Weighed up staying the night or taking a flight back to Heathrow and returning by other means to Gatwick to get the car.
Took the Heathrow flight and was then persuaded to take the coach to Gatwick! What a mistake, the bloody thing goes all round the South East of England before finally arriving at Gatwick! Thought it would at least whisk me there along the motorway door to door M4-M25-M23 but no almost a sightseeing tour that leaves out central London!
Should have stayed the night in Edinburgh (as recommended by the bar staff at the Airport) in the first place!!

Four that come to mind.....

1. Medellin to Quibdo (Colombia). Bought a ticket for the flight 3 hours before it was due to go, but the flight left an hour earlier than was printed on the ticket and I didn't realise because it's something that you don't expect to happen. Complained bitterly to AVIANCA and got hotel/ meals/ taxi expenses all paid for until the next flight which was next day.

2. San Luis to can't remember but somewhere in Brazil. Wasn't exactly missing the plane but due to a technical fault on the runway, the flight got cancelled for 24 hours. Me and a mate said, right we want all expenses, hotel, meals and drinks and taxi to the best hotel in town which was a 5 star hotel. VASP airlines agreed, but in the morning while still pissed, the hotel gave us a huge bill that included lobster thermidor and all sorts of cocktails and bevy that we had drunk. We insisted that VASP would pay, did a runner to the airport and got on the flight without paying.

3. Buenos Aires to Cordoba (Argentina). Turned up at the wrong airport (after a heavy nights drinking and badly hungover) to start a new job (people waiting for me at the destination etc), and had to take a taxi cross city to the other airport where I missed a second flight due to heavy traffic. Had to taxi it back to the original airport for another flight and pay a large amount to get on. Finally I blagged it that it was all the airlines fault and got the job. Bit of a boring one that and very expensive mistake.

4. Apolo to La Paz (Bolivia). The plane landed with one (propeller) engine on fire and this was the only flight out of this remote town per week. During the next couple of days I could see guys working on it with spanners and s***. Then the airline (Lloyd Aereo Boliviana) announced that if anyone wanted to get on, they could go for free. All the 40 odd passengers said NO, and eventually we got out on a military hercules a few days later.

Talking about worst flights when you think you might die, I have a few bad ones, and a friend of mine died on a charter flight that crashed in the Peruvian Amazon.

Mine's a light and bitter.

I awoke in a bedroom in north London beside a very fit bird and we were now both relatively sober. Flight was booked for Gatwick. I got up and missed my flight.
