That is to say, there were stories of various "miracles" or actions performed by similar people, but they were not all the same person and may have taken place over many decades or (as in the case of Merlin) centuries. In that case of course it's perfectly possible that one of the personages referred to is known to be dead, and then further stories arise from other personages that are swept into the same composite character. In that case it might appear that the character "returned from the dead". Now I personally don't believe that about Jesus because I believe that He showed the stigmata to Thomas when He rose again and appeared to him, and invited him to place his hands in them. But that is a matter of faith, of course.
