My goodness, if that is "making a fool of himself" I wonder how you rate the average interview with Mourinho, Wenger, Hughes, Big Sam to name but a few. There is nearly a constant referring and moaning about decisions against them, something that Roy refrains from. And do remember: the footage may not show the very beginning of the conversation. Apart from that: is it appropriate to start an interview inviting criticism about refereeing decisions ? Originally posted by bexleydave
For a start that was when he was West Brom manager, following a win against Bolton, and my view is that Hodgson makes a bit of a fool of himself. Ivan Gaskell wants to ask him about the refereeing decisions, but without leading the interview, hence the general question. There was no justification for that intemperate response. Roy's come close to this type of behaviour in a couple of interviews since he's been with us. Being able to deal with questions from the media politely and calmly is part of his job, but if with age he's turning into an irascible old git, perhaps someone else from the management team should do the post-match interviews.

Personally Id like to see more of this kind of honesty and frankness (no pun intended) in Roys interviews. He always seems far too laboured and predictable and I don't usually bother watching.

His interviews are generally excellent, insighttful without giving much away, honest but positive, tactful where brain-dead officials are concerned, and sensitive to morale and club unity. A far cry from the poor fellow who had to defend England 1 Iceland 2 to the Press. Of course he had better have in his locker the full-on no-holds-barred Anglo-Saxon complete bonkers Kevin Keegan-style rant because from time to time they ask for this.

Commentators always ask, "how important was that first goal?" What possible range of responses are they expecting? Also: why do they need to pay an experienced 'professional' broadcaster to ask these dumb questions? TV presenters cost a fortune. At least £150,000 a year. They could anyone to ask them. Even a Netbot. Then they could sack the TV presenter

TV rights add to over 11 million per match (not for the beeb I know, but they still pay over 60m a year for highlights) and you call 150 grand a year a fortune......... Originally posted by OhthisbloodyPC

I think Roy was right to say what he said, as the presenters do ask some stupid questions at times. Does he lose it? We all do he is after all only human, but he has done a good job with the team in the current situation. Also in dealing with the press. I didn't think Gaskill was being tricky, he was just just trying to prompt the answer without putting too many words in Roy's mouth, but well done Roy for showing a bit of Croydon, seemed like one of the cast of The Long Good Friday there, maybe the interviewer should have just said "the penalty", but who bloody cares, a bad mood, a misunderstanding, does show Roy is no soft touch, and I quite liked the way he wasn't really interested when they were talking about other matches at the start - there was a sense that they didn't realise that Roy's knowledge is several levels above theirs - doesn't mean you have to grovel, but don't get too casual either.

In my opinion, that's the best contribution to this thread (not that it has anything to do with Roy). I'm old enough to have seen the earliest days of MOTD, or whatever it was called in the sixties. None of these inane "interviews" that we now have to waste time on, no puerile "analysis" by superannuated ex-players, just excerpts from the day's football matches - at a fraction of the cost to the TV licence payer that now gets shelled out on these parasites.

Leave some irony for the rest of us... wanna see an impressionist do Roy when he managed England ? rather irreverent, so i will just say : 'Roy Hodgson - Ecuador verdict! - Darren Farley youtube' and a truly outrageous one ... its all in the public domain, been on the telly and all.... so get cross with the comedian if you are incensed. ps. his 'harry rednapp on mastermind' is funny.

I don't know who the BBC is paying these days but I was just reading this: Real Madrid 1 Athletic Bilbao 1. Apparently Athletic Bilbao were leading 0 - 2 at half time. What's more, Real Madrid had 66% of the possession, whereas Athletic Bilbao had 65%. Spot on reporting there, then.
