I tend to think a substitution might have helped if only to lose time and break up play. We will never know if it would have prevented the goal. TFM has the same defensive faults as AWB and the same could have occurred. You could argue we were winning the game for 88 minutes with the same team so what trend was there in the game that would make you want to change?
The fact is however there is a trend of conceding goals in the last minutes of games whatever the quality of the opposition and you would have thought that this would have to be looked into by the management. We cannot afford to throw away points in this way in the remaining fixtures.
COYP

Just thinking about the Tottenham and Bournemouth games, both goals conceded at the back post at corners.

The number of points we have thrown away in the dying embers either conceding or not converting from the penalty spot.We will all be reflecting on this when we are relegated which I firmly believe will be our fate.

Sorry, but Hodgson is going to take us down with his lack of tactical ideas. Yes, we still have a lot of injuries but using subs is not just about replacing players who are injured or off-form. It's about breaking up play for the opposition and wasting a bit of time. Every game he loads the bench with defensive players yet rarely uses them. Cabaye cannot manage 90 mins each week and AWB is still coming to terms with PL every week, so bringing on Riedewald and TFM were two changes that could and should have been made yesterday.

Also, why did we sign Jach and Rakip? Anybody know?

It would be interesting to hear Roy's views. He clearly sees some vakue in keeping the team stable when it's doing well abd perhaps he felt we needed to keep the counter attack threat on to finish the game. It might be that bringing on a defender for townsend meant we sat back more but I'm inclined to agree thst this week we had 3 subs who are in amd around the first team so he had options. Disappointed we didn't win and agree with the suggestions tjat perhaps we need to move wan bissaka in and out of the team to help his development.

Roy has certainly played two full backs on one side, and subbed them in to do so, but they've always been more experienced players so perhaps he feels there's more risk having two kids on one side. But equally he could simply swap out tfm or awb and keep andros in front.

The reason for the late goals is Hodgson's indecision to bring on fresh legs - game after game. 2-1 up with minutes to go, park the bus.

RH seems to have something against parking the bus and making obviously defensive changes, even when we are holding on to a precarious lead.

He is old enough now to know what his strategy is so seemingly the message to Parish is that the bench is not good enough.

Not sure why we signed Rakip and Jach.

Trump lost. Badly. Hahahahahahaha.

A late substitution would taken the sting out of the game and it would not have mattered who came on, but to concede in the last couple minutes again is infuriating.

One other thing, there was no one on the back post when the corner came in, are we learning from all these mistakes I am not so sure?

Yes we could have had one of our shorter players on that post - we had 7 players in the area to their six but both Cabaye and PVA were marking no-one on the edge of our area and Wilf must have been beyond them. I guess they were looking to pick up a ball knocked out but you do wonder if in the 89th minute we should be packing that six yard box - particularly given our recent record of conceding late and theirs of scoring late.

With our history of giving it away in the last few minutes and Bournemouth’s come back record we should’ve packed our penalty area for that last corner with both posts covered - it’s not rocket science !
With our record of poor conversion of chances Roy has to stop these sort of goals and also make us less vulnerable from set plays - pretty basic stuff.
He has to see games out using subs and whatever tactic required to hang on to points.

I've said this in many other threads so apols for repeating in this thread but the Manure game where the lack of substitutions obviously cost us: I believe Sorloth and Blunteke were up front...Jairo has done a decent job if you ask me, why not bring him on?

There have been other games too where I've been puzzled by it. Yes at times the bench has been weak so fair dues, but on Saturday we had Jairo and TFM on the bench.

Also as many have said - it disrupts opponents.

Hope someone has a word

Hodgson is a vastly experienced and capable manager and it is perhaps presumptious to assume that he can take lessons from those who are not steeped in his knowledge of the game.

I believe that when you are leading in the last 15 mins perhaps there is a tendency to 'Let sleeping dogs lie' unless of course certain players are visibly flagging.

Hodgson will have had good reasons not to have brought on the players listed - he did bring on a player against Tottenham and he was culpable in relation to the late goal they scored at a corner so substitutes don't always work !

When this failure to use substitutes first started happening I thought it was Roy making a point to the board about the shortcomings of the squad and the lack of any quality outside his first 11. However its getting silly now and while our bench is not amazing it still has enough to offer fresh legs in the shape of TFM, Kelly and Jaro.
I wish some of these journalists who ask daft questions in press conferences would ask Roy about his reluctance to use subs.

Its just the way he is . His management style is to be meticulous in setting up his sides so everyone knows their job and what is expected of them . He would see having to make subs as more of a disruption to his game plan than disrupting the opposition .
He will not change anything while his plan is working and to be fair it has been for most of the time even against the top teams .

Late goals have given him no time to respond or react and I don't really get the criticism .

The Jach and Racip signings were to cover positions not as immediate first team players .Injuries apart Racip will go back to Benfica and Jach will get his chance next season
