Ridiculous that referees never have to come out and explain themselves. How can you not give a yellow for a deliberate handball?

they picked that up on Sky;he was subbed just after that incident? Yes, the player was Coquelin and the ref was Lee Mason who let him get away with his persistent fouling - until he decided he wouldn't be able to let him do it any longer.

In reply to Pizza Pat's post, the player was Coquelin and the referee was Lee Mason. Also happened in the home game vs Tottenham last season when Moussa Dembele wasn't given a second yellow in the first half;instead the ref (can't remember who it was) signaled a warning to the bench, and Dembele didn't reappear for the second half.

I would agree with all that say he had no excuse but to book Sane for the handball and therefore send him off . I would also say that had our Keeper wiped out one of their strikers at Anfield in the manner that Zaha was taken out not only would the penalty have been given but we would have seen a red card being held up in the air . The incompetence of our referees in general is shocking ,its no surprise that not one from the supposed best league in the world will be at footballs showpiece this summer .

I might be wrong, but isn’t there a double jeopardy rule where a keeper can’t be sent off and give away a penalty now? Originally posted by Elpis

I’m by no means a member of the referee fan club but I do feel at times we latch on the refereeing decisions too easily instead of just conceding that we didn’t do enough. After seeing the first incident again I’d say it was a penalty and had it been Wilf at Anfield we’d all be screaming for it. Was there contact? Yes. Was there enough for him to go down? Yes. Was there enough for him to fall to the ground in the fashion he did? No, and that’s the reason he didn’t get the decision, so more fool him, but to me it was a penalty. The second one was undeniably a booking, but given the above I think it actually balanced out a bit. Fact of the matter is, sticking 10 men behind the ball, passing the ball about like it’s a game of rugby and still not being able to see games out can be classed as unlucky as much as we want it to. But it’ll count for nothing if we’re in the championship next year. It’s gonna go right to the death.

Normally I'd be with you there, especially with the tendency round here to latch on to theory that the big clubs get all the decisions whilst conveniently ignoring borderline stuff (looking at you Wilf) that goes our way all the time. The first decision there wasn't enough contact for him to go down at all (proved by the fact that he didn't even come close to going down, wasn't impeded at all in fact) and if he did it would been simulation, whether the ref would have seen that if Mané's acting ability was better is another issue. The second was one of the more ridiculous decisions I've ever seen by a ref, it was just straight out wrong and he only wasn't carded because he already had one. Refs just seem to be disinclined to send people off these days, as I said in the match thread it's almost as if players are safer if they have one card than if they didn't have any. As I said before normally I would agree with you 100% but on this occasion I just can't. The second decision completely changed the nature of the match, could they have still beaten us 2-1? Of course, might even have been worse if we'd pissed them off by knocking them down to ten men but we'll never know because the ref decided he was above the rules of the game.

The way I read it is the keeper gets off with a yellow if he has made a genuine attempt to play the ball. The Liverpool keeper had no chance of playing the ball and some would say was also guilty of dangerous play ,both still straight reds .

The referee was spot-on with the penalty and deservedly awarded a yellow to Mane for diving. We don't know how the game would have unfolded if Mane had been sent off but we do know that Benteke's efforts in front of goal were embarrassing and Sakho was responsible for inept defending for the 2 Liverpool goals. This is why we lost, NOT because of the referee who overall had a very good game. Going out now for a tipple or two and watching the big fight ! Edited by Willo (31 Mar 2018 8.31pm)

Swarbrick screwed up, why not just admit it? if that was a Palace player on a yellow, he would most certainly have been sent off, yes or no??
