We are officially in George Orwell's 1984.

Yep, and he was a socialist who actually cared about free speech.....not like these third rate progressives today.

One of his famous quotes, 'If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.'

Apparently for some, this should only extends to serious intellectual ideas that aren't offensive to others.

If someone makes a bad taste joke I ignore them or I might criticise them....I don't look to send them to prison.....these are awful people.

No one spied on him, and secretly filmed him making an offensive joke in the privacy of his own home.
He had the genius idea to put it all over the World Wide Web, and hey, look what happened.

Erm... it's about how thought is suppressed under a totalitarian regime. And not sure Orwell could have predicted the internet when the book was written in 1949.

Along similar lines, I'd be interesred to hear why the mods pulled my post today about Tottenham being Jewish, in the thread about Spurs making a derisory £40 millon bid for Zaha.

It was a joke ffs. That's all. The Jewish are known for being careful with their money.

If some poor little soul was offended by that then they need to either get a life or counselling.

Couldn't agree more. These people need to toughen up fast or life is going to be very difficult for them.

I wonder how many years of jail time Monty Python would have received for the Life of Brian...some of the best comedy of all time is wildly offensive. And that's OK.

Thats right. Apparently it's alright for Mel Brookes to rip the Jews to pieces whilst prancing about as Hitler. OK he's Jewish himself, but if you're offended by the content, you're offended by the content. You can't pick and choose.

I imagine it had something to do with this being a racial stereotype.

Being offensive is part of free speech! Comedy is finished if you can't cause offence. In the context, it was CLEARLY a joke and you must know that he wasn't organising a hate campaign against Jews. I mean, did you take the clip literally??

No he wasn't organising a hate campaign and he wasn't tried for that either he was found guilty of sending by "means of a public electronic communications network a message or other matter that is grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character".
Breaking taboos and being offensive is part of the creative process, I'll defend Bill Hicks, Frankie Boyle, the Sex pistols and others but the point is their offensiveness is to comment on society or gain a deeper understanding being offensive for the sake of being offensive is just being offensive. To put it in context this men taugtht a dog to nazi salute, even then if he had a good reason why he did it a could see an arguement of free speech but he did it to annoy his girlfriend.

You might as well talk to the back of your hand with these people. They aren't worth it.

Action has to be taken in other ways. There is going to be a demonstration outside the houses of parliament on the 23rd of April, which is the day of the sentencing.

It's being organised by the liberalists - UK. I'll provide more details when I know them.

Sorry if I'm miss reading you here Stirling, but this is a discussion on free speeach, I could add Voltaire to the Orwell quotes 'I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it'
If free speech mean anything it means engaging with people you disagree with through discussion. As I sorry if I'm miss reading you comments.

I was given tickets to see Jimmy Carr,Jesus I hope any one that is offended easily never goes to him live....nothing is spared.

This new lot would sentence him to 10 years hard Labour.

Ha...the paradox of stating that you agree with the imprisoning of certain people over offence while you quote Voltaire...because you view some more worthy than others!.....By the way that isn't actually a real quote from Voltaire but a summary of his beliefs.

I'm not stopping your right to expression....and I wouldn't agree with you being punished for expressing your views. However, your replies thus far seem tone deaf to the points made and just restate your position....what's the point, but ok I'll answer a point you make.

You mention comedians you like and the sex pistols and make a point that you can defend them because you could see justified 'commentary' in their offence......Wow...boy that is weak.....You ever considered that far more relevant to them was making money and that shock value enabled it? You viewing their 'offence' as defendable but not others is extremely subjective.

It's a point made on very unsteady ground.
