And that, in itself, is totally wrong. I don't care who the perpetrator is.

I don't think that only 'leg-breakers' should get the full force of the book thrown at them,
in fact.

It is clear, seeing Puncheon preparing his 'challenge', what he intended to do. It could have been achieved with an ankle tap if all he wanted was to stop the player. No, there was more to it than that and both players will now carry the resultant injuries of a reckless and hot-headed, violent surge

Yes it was bad, yes it was cynical, but it was never a leg breaker, unlike the Deli Ali tackle on De Bruyne a few weeks ago. Did Ali get a 6 match ban, nope, he only received a yellow...

I started off by saying it was bad and cynical. My point is there is no consistency when it comes to dealing out punishments. I take it you never saw the Deli Ali challenge???

I've seen a lot worse... there was no malice a booking was the correct decision. It was a late tackle by a desperate and rusty player. You are blowing it out of proportion, players like De Bruyne and Zaha will always be at peril from late and clumsy tackles because they are so quick and hard to predict

Move on

I come from that generation too,
mate and I'm glad that the thuggery we used to take for granted has been outlawed: the dreaded tackle from behind that was responsible for so many careers ending early.

I agree with you on the cynicism that we see today in terms of what you describe and it seems that cheats will try to prosper no matter in what age.

In my opinion thuggery and cynicism belong in the same category - cheating.

I hate it.

I hope Punch recovers quickly too. De Bruyne too, for that matter.

Well this simpleton still thinks Punch took one for team . I wouldn't say he injured himself or De Bruyne on purpose though ,that really is a rather stupid thing to suggest .
The tackle was granted poor and probably fuelled by the past month or so that has seen him out of the side but it was a tackle he HAD to attempt regardless .

To be honest I come from a generation when players used to make such tackles without so much as a telling off from the ref ,bookings and sending offs were reserved for really bad tackles and fisticuffs . I would rather have that any day of the week than the cowardly fouls , shirt pulling , faking and simulation that I would call cheating, not an open for all to see attempt (if poor one) to make a tackle .

Get well soon Punch .

No, Gary, I didn't see it but absolutely agree that consistency is the key.

That and stricter FA.

Many people are sick of managers and players breaking the rules because they can. If it wasn't worth it, they wouldn't - end of.

I have seen an awful lot worse than that tackle. There have been plenty of occasions where players have gone in studs showing directly onto an ankle or the back of a calf, Dele Alli is a prime example of players doing this. Nothing happens to him, why should anything different happen to Puncheon?

Because Dele Alli is the darling of the World Cup winners elect that are Southgate's fantastic England team whereas Puncheon is considered fair game.

The former incidentally is a nastly little thug who does this again and again apparently with Spurs' full blessing.

Can't remember who it was that did basically the same to Tomkins against Liverpool last year, not a peep from the powers that be.

Grujic. Horrible tackle, blatant straight red. It was worse, studs up into his calf. Tomkins was out for weeks after that and we were right up against it. For the rest of that game he couldn't come off because we'd used all the subs up and Fraizer Campbell had to play in central defence.

That's the one.
Thinking about it it was worse than Punch's.
