For me it would be a case of looking at what position we can afford to lose a player the most, without weakening the team too much. assuming that we cannot replace that player but use cash to strengthen other parts of the team in more need. Of course with one striker fit, that means lose Tekkers. Then we are a lot weaker. In mid, it's similar for me, we have in my eyes enough players to cover injuries. But not huge strength in depth. In defence however I think it's a different matter. We bought a lot of defenders over the last 2 Windows, especially with de boers desire for 3 at the back. So we have most cover there. Jairo is young so odd to let go, however all of Sako, Dann, Tompkins and Jairo could commend a decent fee without weakening the team massively. Should mutliple injuries occur the likes of Kelly and tfm can definitely cover for a game or 2. Same at left back, you could argue we need 2 with a ward to cover if both get injured, so I think we can allow one to go.

I'd be glad if we could cash in on PVA and reinvest some of that in a young left back with potential. I'd want to keep Jairo, as he's young with good technique and is likely to develop into a first-teamer with more development. Tomkins has proved himself to be the second-best central defender at the club and, with Sakho's ability to get injured, I think it would be insanity to sell him without a like for like replacement lined up and some profit on the deal on our side. Obviously, if we could get at least a bag of magic beans and a few training bibs for Mutch, that would be a bonus. I wonder if KaiKai has a future here, or will become the next Sean Scannell?
Well I think Simon's head is large; always involved in espionage. (Name that tune) |

What would be the point of looking to sell in January some of the players mentioned in this thread? £20m for Tomkins. Prime objective has to be bringing a goal keeper and possibly a striker but with Wickham back training now he will hopefully have some game-time in a reserve match in the next couple of weeks and on from there. If TFM went back could we initially loan a decent striker to complement Benteke would that be an option? Cannot see the club making any wholesale changes or even considering selling Wilf, Townsend, Benteke or Cabaye until the the summer.

Reality is that nobody should be sold UNTIL we have replacements confirmed to cover that position. Can't help but think that to lose Zaha in January transfer window would equate to football suicide by way of staying up.

I don’t think we have any intention on selling Zaha in January but Roy no doubt has said a lot of things in the press recently. I believe this is to gain a bid to be rejected out of hand so to increase the bids that will come in the summer If we officially refuse a 38m bid in two weeks we know we will expect more come June

Sell Tompkins is just silly. who plays there now if we don't have Tompkins? Kelly? Nope playing RB.. Timothy..nope injured. Ward..nope injured/suspended etc etc etc etc at any time in next 25 games and training sessions. let's get Damian back in? Love the guy but could/should have replaced him a season back. Sell Andros. And play who? Sako..great for 30/45 mins. Not a whole match tracking back like Andros does. KaiKai..nope. RLC? He's covering Luka suspension. So... hmmm Ok. Sell /Release: Lee. Mutch. Wayne. Profit: 1m. 1m. 6m. Buy: first choice GK. first choice striker. Cover for CB,cover for CM and cover for wing. Cost: 15m. 20m. 10m. 10m. 10m. Example: fabianski. Holgate. Redmond. Coquelin. Ward-Prowse. Clukas.

It would be complete stupidity to entertain offers for Wilf until the question "Who will we get in to replace him?" has a satisfactory answer. And as far as I can see at the moment the only response to that question that's forthcoming is "F*** knows". The only possible replacements I can think of a) play at a higher level b) cost stupid amounts of money and c) won't function alongside players in other positions that aren't of similarly stratospheric quality. If he can't be replaced directly then it's a matter of far-reaching changes to our game and a whole series of other signings which would be highly disruptive and risky - especially in January.
