A mate of mine lives in Panama and owns a football team down there*. He says they're very happy with this group...

* The story of how an American, with little or no prior interest in futbol, ends up own a professional team, goes like this:

My friend Chuck, as a relatively wealthy gringo in Panama, was approached about donating some money to fix up the town square. The local boys had taken to playing futbol on the square, but it was unkempt with very little grass. He gave them some money - nothing by 1st world standards - and they put down some grass, drew some lines and erected the goals.

The boys started getting good, and were receiving offers from other amateur sides for fixtures, but they had no proper kit. So Chuck was asked again and he furnished them with the shirts etc. they needed. Then they were invited to join a regional amateur league, which they did - with Chuck stumping up the entrance fee and travel expenses.

Bear in mind, the money we're talking about here is a pittance - because it's Panama.

Well they continued their strong play and won games in the new league. So much so that they found themselves in the knockout tournament to play in to the bottom professional league. Well, the boys had been getting good, and they absolutely smashed this tournament, and became a properly professional team in the Panama leagues.

There was only one problem, so they went again to Chuck> "What do you need now?" he asked. "We need and owner," they said (in Spanish), "and we picked you." So Chuck was installed as the owner of Club Deportivo Centenario de Coclé, who remain, years later, a 2nd division side in the Panamanan leagues.

And, as for Chuck's actual interest in futbol? Well, he was on the sidelines when the national team clinched qualification for Russia 2018.

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

Great story!

For me, most intriguing group is Argentina Iceland Croatia and Nigeria. Croatia are a brilliant team to watch, Iceland are one of the great national stories of recent times, Nigeria have a very tidy side qhile Argentina are immense unerachievers given their individual qualities...but for the football romantic in me, I really hope this is Messi's WC.

If punk ever happened I'd be preaching the law, instead of listenin to Lydon lecture BBC4

Belgium have a bunch of top talent; just no depth. They have a soft group and are in a group matched up against the other soft group for the next round. After that, anything can happen...
