Phew.

I was beginning to get worried as there hasn't been a scapegoat thread for a few weeks. I thought the standard of HOL bitching was slacking.

He was bloody good at Villa when they played it on the floor. And Belgium never used constant high ball tactics when he played. Maybe he is just not as good now? He also couldn't get into Liverpool's team even after Suarez leaving and Sturridge long-term injured.

We didn't buy a pony but we haven't bought a thoroughbred either even though he has cost us £40mill so far.

How long ago was he at Villa? Don't think the Liverpool scenario got to him? That also played it on the floor

He was never BLOODY GOOD at Villa. He was just an interesting prospect as he was very young

To maintain a 2:1 ratio over 3 seasons, playing for one of the worst teams in the division, whilst being a young player is hugely impressive - to suggest otherwise is just incorrect.

Benteke has more career PL goals than Gayle has PL games; I think that speaks volumes for the gulf in class.

Yeah, but he played more than triple the number of minutes the others got. Extrapolating, had they gotten Benteke's minutes, Gayle and probably others too would have scored more.

I prefer to look at what actually happened rather than what could have happened.

If we write off the games up until Chelsea due to Frank's incompetence , and the difficulty of the games until Chelsea.
Then it must be Julian Speroni, as he came into a team that was improving and has not saved anything of note , and based on how we judge our keepers now could be held responsible for costing us 4 points.

2:1 ratio only if you include his penalty goals. Which were probably a record high for a striker in the PL at that time

This confirms what I suspected.

Quite frankly - ( & maybe I am just too forgiving ) I am completely prepared to write off everything that happened before today - during early season the club / team was in turmoil with the fdb experiment or key players out or we were playing teams that were vastly more experienced / more expensive / top 6 etc - where we would have been lucky to get anything out of those games - for me judgment should be considered from today onward, Roy has now had a few weeks to get his thoughts across & we have a few games in front of us now where points should be considered as a real possibility / probability - I honestly hope that we can collectively come together ( club / team / supporters) & start to perform together as we know we can.

Gayle was good at coming off the bench when games opened up for whatever reason, or you went 2 up front. Also good at finishing loose. balls.

Whenever he started he was marked out of the game, never showed himself with his back to goal, never found a space or channel. Totally ineffective as a lone striker in the modern game when you need to be one.

That's why he's a good championship striker and not a good prem striker. Apparently he's not a good trainer and messes about like a school boy with fringe players that know they're not in the frame. Fine if you're doing the business regularly. Not if you aren't or can't.
