We have 'mental' people too. It would be off the scale. It is a leadership problem but it is also very much a certain attitude about guns problem. I can honestly say I have never met someone who has said they 'would like to own a gun' and I bet that goes for most of us. In some areas us Brits are most civilised still and a fine example to others. If the UK had the same gun laws and lassie faire approach to guns the US had, Friday and Saturday night in most town and city centres would be like downtown Beirut in the 80s. Were a nation that seems to love drinking and fighting, throwing guns into that mix would be catastrophic. If I was American, I'd have a s**tload of guns. Which is as good an argument for gun control I've heard. Guns are awesome, I loved going shooting as a youth. Edited by jamiemartin721 (06 Nov 2017 5.11pm)

It's the higher and tougher road, though, which is why they won't do it. Only half sounds terrible. In the UK it is 99.75% who don't own a gun. We have 153,000 firearms certificates issued as of two years ago.

My dad used to have three (skewing the stats somewhat) although he's now down to one. But its almost unheard of in the UK to own guns (and those that due probably own no more than three, shotguns). If I remember rightly, you cannot own a long arm (shotgun or rifle) with a capacity of more than three rounds, or a pistol of higher than .22 calibre (unless you have a close protection licence or specific exemption which is approved by the home secretary). I knew some people who were into sealed knot, who owned Muskets and even they're covered by specific legislation (limiting the amount and source of black powder they can own, and how its stored). Friend of my dads culls deer, which allows him to own a rifle, which is the only calibre of rifle you can own in the UK that fires a calibre above .22 (again I think the rule on 3 rounds is the same, for a semi-automatic - and no magazines). Then there is legislation about how your store your guns (lockable, fixed gun cabinet), and transport them (unloaded and bagged, in the boot of the car), as well as annual police inspections; and the certificate is renewed on a annual basis. Probably far more than 99.75% of the UK don't own guns - as most gun owners probably have two or three shotguns, most of which will be either 410 or 12ga buckshot (I think almost every other type of shotgun round is illegal - although you can legally buy 4ga rounds - its almost impossible to get a shotgun that can use them properly).

Its a mental issue because you can take away the guns, but the desire to hurt and maim remains. We still dont know what triggered the Las Vegas shooter. Either way, if they didnt have guns, they may well have built bombs instead. I honestly blame the invention of the world wide web. What it has given us is less than what it has taken away.

Either way, if they didnt have guns, they may well have built bombs instead. That's true of course and it would happen but in reality the result is far less would than reach for guns. Created bombs requires knowledge and inclination. Firing a gun requires far less ability. People tend to use tools of convenience....like the UK, if the guns weren't conveniently to hand in the US your attacks using knifes would go up. Still, potentially deadly but with far less capacity for mass killings. But it's a moot point, with more guns than people in your system nothing is going to change.
