So disabled people shouldn't have a national day where our footballers wear there symbol and we buy and wear flowers for them?

Only injured/dead soldiers?

Not saying they shouldn't just questioning why others shouldn't as well.

Well people fought & died for you to say that. Its a free country & if you feel that strongly about this cause maybe start a campaign?

The point is that the servicemen have fought and died for our way of life /safety. The disabled have their Poppy Day, every day by getting the best parking spaces. I am of course joking.

I completely support Poppy day, for me to say that others in need should be supported in a similar fashion does NOT mean i don't support our armed services or Poppy day.

That's all.

I am a proud Irishman and I wear a poppy to recognise that my grandfather (another proud Irishman) gave his life in 1917 on the Western Front.
I also believe everyone has the right to choose not to wear one without any pressure.
That is what my grandfather fought and died for.

Odd. He laid a wreath last year.

Respect to your grandfather.

I also respect this tradition but yes, compulsion is rarely helpful, though I do believe criticism is fair comment.

People have freedom to comment or not to comment.

What is politically correct about remembering the war dead ?

I hear your point, and realise it doesn't fit into the usual PC mould. Furthermore I personally support this charity, so I can be objective.
The reason I described it as politically correct is because of the mass hysteria stirred up by anyone who doesn't want to wear the poppy, ie James McClean, as much as I disagree with his politics, Id be a hypocrite if I didn't agree his treatment by the media waa harsh. Everyone is free to support charities and political causes but it should never be obligatory in sport.
There's one thing however that I think should be respected and that is respect to the national anthem of the country being played in, which is why I vehemently disagree to the "take a knee" trend in the USA right now.

Could be worse, could be Croat/Serb living memory war rather than remembering 100 WW1 70 years WW2

And your evidence for this is?

I didn't cite evidence because I assumed (wrongly) that it was well known about links between the IRA and the Nazis. I don't want to derail this thread from the original question so this is my fault for mentioning it. A quick look on Wikipedia (below) gives some context although not everyone will accept that as a valid source. There are plenty of other history books and websites so take your pick.

Anyway my bad and I repeat I am fine with people not wearing a poppy it is their choice.

Just a point about ‘compulsion’. Surely it’s the football club that decides to sport the poppy on its shirts, and if players want to play for their club then that’s the shirt they wear that week. If a player was opposed to gambling, they wouldn’t get a choice about wearing a shirt with a betting firm’s logo in it, would they?

When I see a team wearing the poppy on its shirts I see it as the club making a gesture, not the individual players.

It's very sad that he refuses to honour those that died to that he could earn a small fortune from their descendants every week

Growing up the whole point of poppies was to make a conscious effort to go and pay for one, then wear it. This made it more of a worthwhile and respectful act.

My suggestion to footballers. On Remembrance weekend you are given the choice of a shirt with a poppy and one without. If you want to wear the poppy-emblazoned on you have to donate £ ........ to the Poppy Appeal.
