It'll change once the whole place has been redeveloped. The nearby blocks of flats are full of young London office workers so the gentrification has started. West Croydon station may stay sh1t with the chicken bone littering but it'll be a different place and people there once it's finished.

Grants gone, then Allders. The shops in the north end with newspaper stuck to the windows instead of displays, the town is depressing. When I was in my twenties, if you bought something in George Street it was usually a quality item, now its probably a second hand mobile phone.

I've lived in Croydon for the entirety of my 22 year old life, and I do find it funny that most of the people who bad-mouth the place (in the media or in general conversation) tend to have either never actually been here before or have only lived in the place very briefly before leaving.

Call me whatever you want, but I love this town and I wouldn't trade growing up here for anywhere else. Yes of course the place has its problems and is a million miles from perfect, but it has managed to retain a sense of community and identity (not least because of our beloved CPFC) that very few other parts of London have.

Of course I do understand that mass immigration has left large numbers of people feeling somewhat alienated from the neighbourhoods that they grew up in, but to blame the town's modern problems solely on immigration is completely ridiculous.

If you dream of a return to a Croydon (or Britain for that matter) which is 99.9% white, then please feel free to do so. Just remember that that view is a million, million miles away from the way that the average young Croydonite (White, Black or Asian) wants things to be.

The really good thing is the people that can’t hack Croydon b*gg*r off to semi rural idylls leaving the edgier citizens to it. We like living here. We enjoy the cultural mix and the interesting reputation.

I tried to drag the kids to Prague to live, they were having none of it.

Croydon used to be ever so posh. Had its own supermarket "Caters". When it first opened all the customers received a free chicken. The local ambulances were uniquely two tone grey. You could get salmonella poisoning and travel to hospital in style!

turtles for all your diy stuff. Beano's for the free music blasting into the street.

surrey street market.....all these bananas fifty pee. fifty fifty fifty pee. all these bananas fifty pee.

one of the oldest judo clubs in europe. and the best.

happiest memory...lying post op in a ward at the Mayday, hearing our boys were winning at Man City, and seeing all the old geezers ( both patients and staff ) start to smile...

worst memory....half drunk, travelling in a taxi back to the house of a fit bird and not being invited in for coffee.

love/hate. croydon is both.

Is/was Croydon ever a destination ?
To me, it was always somewhere you changed trains/trams/drove through, on the way to somewhere else.
Way too much concrete for my liking, and more shlt memories than good.
Liked the Cartoon Club (is that still there ?), Wing Yip on Purley Way, but generally it started as a poor design, and can only get worse
