This is our 5th consecutive season in the PL but in the last 4 we still have not won a game without Punch in the team. Maybe we should hold off criticizing JP's influence until the rest of the team can prove they can win without him.

A couple of months ago I was in conversation with an Ex-Professional who played at the top level in England some moons ago.

He said a team he played for had 'Captains' and leaders all over the pitch but alas only one who was involved in the toss-up ! So it is not just the man with the armband who is responsible for spurring on the 'troops. But of course the referee will turn to the chap with the armband to resolve any disciplinary issues on the field of play.

The very best teams have leaders all over. Some do not, like us.

The top man Utd and Arsenal teams of the past are classic examples of leaders throughout the team. Top international sides too. England 90 and 96.

An Iain Dowie signing.
Gained a reputation for starting well at clubs before fading away after falling out of favour.

I don't agree with that. That maybe in yesteryear when the players appeared older and behaved better against today when lots of them are younger certainly some outlook, demeanor and temperament!

You may find one or two teams in that situation however most teams rely on their captain who speaks to the players on the field, calms certain players down, cajoles/motivates individuals and the team and relays messages from the bench, sees oncoming situations and covers or gets it covered, liaises/discusses with the ref any point of order he likes not only disciplinary issues.

Punch is an prime example of that with Wilf when he gets cross from being fouled. Punch has the experience to speak to refs about firstly the treatment Wilf gets and secondly speak to Wilf to calm him down a bit. Dann never seemed to bother to even try to speak to Wilf about trying to calm down let alone speaking to the ref about the fouling.

To be fair that's a good point, Punch does bring those qualities. Maybe we shouldn't be so rash in wanting him dropped?

Just see other players in our team in better form right now. But do we sacrifice his leadership qualities for them?

I want players for what they can produce on the field of play and be a positive influence playing wise, not someone who has been on the wane for quite a while and seemingly is good at being a 'Carrier Pigeon' for messages from the bench etc etc.As for motivation, it is said that certain players lead by example - Puncheon can hardly be placed in that category.Pick on form and ability I say.

I agree he is a good communicator but that does not mean we will win matches as has been so clear this season.

Sadly his time is up and he has to be dropped. Other players must be sat on the bench wondering what they have to do to get in the team and that is also bad for morale.

Teams have sussed him out. He has one foot so all they do is force him to turn away to stay on his left which results in moves breaking down or going backwards. Such an easy player to mark...

Even today with a few injuries he could bring Schlupp in on the left, have RLC,Milo and Cabaye in the middle and Townsend on right.

I never thought I would say it but I would be happy with Hennesey as captain if it meant Puncheon being dropped!

Sorry Jason, great club man but quit whilst you are still ahead. Happy for him to remain club captain in and around the squad, just not on the pitch!
