I guess my point is that you and I appear to have born with a rational mind.

She wasn't, she ruined lives but she is also going to live with that, probably because of a mental health issue.

We don't take care of people with mental health issues well in this country. Theresa May was right about this at the last election & the unpopularity of this issue contributed to her not getting a majority at the last election. That, is one of the quagmires of Britain.

What she did to others is unforgivable but there surely must be an element of recognition that she is a seriously messed up person.

She must have been in a very bad place to do this. I am not excusing her behaviour or condoning it. I think it is disgusting. But I don't think it is the actions of a rational person.

What does this mean though?

What should the state be doing?

I am a civic conservative. I believe that those that are able have a civic responsibility to those less fortunate. That means supporting charities that are dedicated to supporting those less fortunate.

I do not believe in big state, far from it. Charity should, in my opinion, be at the heart of our activity.

It may be that she really was attacked at some point and it set her on this warped path.

It's a messed up thing to make up though. My sympathy is in short supply considering she made the conscious decision to ruin innocent lives.

She had been raped as a child, according to the judge, but ultimately, that does not excuse responsibility for her actions, especially given one of the men went to prison for two years (on a seven year stretch).

Hopefully she'll get the help she needs inside or transferred to somewhere she can.

I agree with all of this.

I can only imagine what that could do to a person and it's clear it has damaged her life which is very sad. Lots of people a dealt a crap hand though and do not go on to ruin others lives.

At least now that it's all out in the open she can receive the help she needs and those whose lives she cruelty targeted can attempt to repair some of the damage done.

That does not excuse responsibility for the legal system that believed her and locked him up.

These types of damaged people have always existed.

No it doesn't, and I'd have more sympathy if she'd made a mental health plea. So no matter what sympathy people might have for her, she has to answer for her crimes of perverting the course of justice and perjury.

These kinds of damaged people have always existed, yes, they have, as have the kinds of people who cause that damage in the first place. I think there is a need for much better mental health and rape services in the UK, that are properly funded, anonymous, free and provide good access to counselling, therapy etc for the victims of sexual violence.

Too many damaged people seem to be left to 'sort their own problems out' without reasonable help and direction.

I also think, given that the bloke who was sent to prison got 7 years and served 2, that 10 years seems pretty reasonable a sentence.

I haven't seen that mentioned in any of the reports I've read.

I have seen the following though:

“Ms Beale stands by the claims she made in this matter and if she had her time again she would again plead not guilty to these matters and contest the trial.”

That cyclist currently in the news is most likely only going to jail because, in the words of the judge, he hasn't shown an "iota of remorse" and not because he did it. I'd say the above statement shows less than an iota of remorse.

And also:
In a victim impact statement, Beale described the “devastating” effect the “rape” had on her, adding: “I feel that any sentence he receives will never reflect the life sentence that he gave me.”

Which shows how weak the sentence she received for ruining 15 lives is.

Optimistic as ever
