I went to Graceland about eleven years ago while touring the States and whenever you interacted with a guide or staff there they said 'Thangyou vera much' in that presumably Mississippi accent that Elvis had. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (16 Aug 2017 7.43pm)

Elvis is the king. He was super cool and those of you calling his music boring need to consider the time and place that it was released. Anything but boring at the time. And in my opinion less boring than ed sheeran and that kind of crap

The day he died I was on a trip with my uncle and auntie I was 11 years old . We drove past Stonehenge there was a big storm brewing and I saw lightning flashing over the stones and a cold chill went up my spine. When we got back to there house they put on the 10.00 o'clock news and and it came in that Elvis was dead. Been thinking about that a lot today. I always felt that if he had survived after the death of Tom Parker then his career could have reignited. Similar to Jonnie Cash who made some great albums late in his life. Just imagine a fit slimmed down Elvis singing at live aid he would have only been 50 in 1985.

I do like his songs. Can't Help Falling in Love, Always on My Mind (tremendous song), In the Ghetto, If I Can Dream (a great song of hope), Suspicious Minds, The Wonder of You, so many more all great songs. Edited by johnno42000 (16 Aug 2017 8.34pm)

I was watching The Slits in Central London somewhere! I found out the next day Elvis had died and was saddened to hear the news as I had always been an keen fan thanks to my parents always playing his records when I was a boy. My pals formed an Elvis 'tribute 'band(tho' they cover several artists from the 50s) called The Sonny Ray Band [Link] I also remember an Indian Elvis impersonator who used to do the Old Kent Road and Forest Hill pubs.Long live the King! (edit) One of my fav Elvis tracks [Link] Ollie's Dad,Ash. Edited by OllieMaidstoneEagle (16 Aug 2017 9.24pm)

I was never a fan myself but I know several who were, and in a big way.I didn't think he actually "changed music" in any major way himself, but he did popularise rock'n'roll to a market well beyond it's core audience. To me Little Richard will always be the King (and Queen) of rock, as his music and performances were genuinely exciting and spontaneous, rather than Elvis' more choreographed and mannered style. Elvis was always going to be more widely accepted as a good looking country boy, so he did what the Colonel told him, smiled, worked hard and kept quiet (and paid the Colonel 50% of his earnings). Sam Philips of Sun Records sold his interest in Elvis to RCA for $35,000 in 1955; it's not on record how long he spent kicking himself! Still, he retained Jerry Lee, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins, so he wasn't too poor as a result Elvis himself said that Roy Orbison was a much better singer than he was, and I tend to agree.
