One of my contacts in Spain informed me that at Real Madrid, thousands flock to the entrance outside the main stand waiting for the team bus to arrive. Police horses keep the vast crowd at bay and a road leading to the ground is sealed off.The team bus gets a Police escort to the stadium and when it arrives it is met with a frenzy of raucous support with cameras clicking everywhere, however the windows of the coach are blackened out so one cannot see the players.Maybe one day this will happen at Selhurst Park !!!!

In 1995, I was fortunate to play in an off-season golf day with Coleman, Shaw and Southgate and went to the Blue Orchid with them later to carry on what was already a heavy session. Boy can Coleman drink and great company! Those guys did not have an issue spending time with fans and doing autographs and in particular one request for a part of a girls anatomy to be signed in the absence of paper! Won't say which player though. You don't see that sort of commitment to fans in the modern game............well not if you don't want to get arrested anyway!

Yes in the old days, I recall engaging in conversation with a temulent Salako in Kember's winebar who was accompanied by Shaw. And mixing with many of the Palace team in Snifters, I believe after the 0-0 away draw at Reading. The team knew me as we used to talk in the 'Executive Club' bar which they used to frequent after games.
