The early impressions is we will be underprepared as usual. We have a good group of 12 to 15 players but little else after that in terms of quality and experience. Agree with this - I'm not sure our new manager understands just how hard the prem is? This new formation in my opinion only works when you have a squad of prem class players. Our one is more suited to the Sam A / Pullis type of football where you get the best out of a squad of good prem players with a couple of top prem players within it? Hope I'm proven wrong but I can see the same season as last heading our way?

Like others I feel that we look a little thin on the ground squad wise. I just hope that this new formation works as we certainly need to pick up points very early in the season unlike last season. Huddersfield will be one hell of a test particularly as they play a high pressing game which will really test this new formation. We will need to be very comfortable on the ball and move it quickly. Don't like the idea of Luka not being in midfield. Feel we are not using him to the best of his ability. Also a little concerned that we seem to be relying on getting the ball to Wilf all the time. Definetly require additions to the squad To add strength and depth.ideally sooner rather than later.

Add in a new system all our players suit when we don't have all the players needed and I won't be surprised if we make it harder for ourselves. Hopefully not though.

Whether we rate puncheon or not, he will play centrally that only leaves one centre mid position. I wonder if we should try loftus-cheek as a wide forward alongside Benteke and Zaha.

It's been many years since I've posted on here although I follow these pages daily. In more recent weeks I've observed the postings of bexleydave and I think we are very much of the same mind. I suspect many will view this as negative or pessimistic thinking, I prefer cautious. I used to really love watching Ajax and the Dutch national teams of the 70's with their brand of 'total football', but to play like that you need at least 7 or 8 technically gifted, probably world class players on the field at the same time.Realistically we're never likely to have that luxury. Starting to rebuild the academy I totally applaud, but that is long term, it takes time to bring the necessary talent through. The pressures of the Prem today don't allow for that. We have limited funds compounded by the ongoing ground issues and I for one would have felt more confident entering this new season playing the old (if unfashionable) counter-attacking formation, just bolstering up the back line with new signings. Still, we are where we are and I dearly want to be proved wrong so the very best luck to FdB and the team.

I think a lot of supporters have been surprised by developments on the field of play since FDB was appointed. I envisage a very short "Honeymoon period" for him if it all starts to go wrong.I can see all the protestations of "Walk before you run", "Playing players out of position" etc etc.Better work out for FDB else he will need to acquire a tin helmet.

The squad other than missing Sakho, is now at least the same as which finished last season. JR and Ruben have been added to the squad. Frank is trying his 343 (3 recognized defenders) which can easily switch to 433, or what we are used to 451, or 541 when we are up against it. Its been great to see him giving the youngsters a chance to shine. If he can get the lads to perform as Sam did in that purple spell we should get to the 40 points quicker than the season just completed. Bring on the Huddersfield.

I think it is a case of seeing what some of these players can do under match conditions against senior sides. As for Huddersfield, I happen to think this is a potential 'Banana Skin'.
