Of course they had an agenda, and of course (haven't watched it) its likely not to be "balanced"....but there's no hiding it.....We were let down by some moronic posts and no amount of blaming the Beeb or Mr Thomas gets round that..

I think the thred has been deleted, a bit late after the fact.
GT clearly took one of the posts out of context, however there were some extremely offensive posts that he read out that clearly were not.
One of them regarding a fence around the family stand was particularly vile and you could read the poster in questions name despite the BBC best effort to blur it out!
Im sure some people used to justify racism and racist chants in a similar way as 'just a bit of banter'.

Well it's just bang out of order then.

Palace fans have got to make sure this Brighton chant doesn't happen. We need to police it ourselves.

Yup,looks like it's gone. It was still there yesterdays.

Cucking repeatedly said this was going to happen and urged the Mods to take the thread down.

Our only option is now to really go Gay friendly if we want to avoid being vilified.

I personally don't mind that, albeit I find the constant badgering from the LGBTA lobby pretty tedious. In fact I would welcome it, really reach out the hand of kindness to whoever.

Maybe back to my thread from two years ago about wouldn't it be cool to have the first openly Gay Premier League player. The daft thing is I genuinely believe we would be in a better position to deal with that than pretty much any other club.

I have to admit, I didn't see that specific comment you talked about but it does sound bad.

I haven't seen the documentary but I assume the BBC did clarify that about three people made offensive comments and that's out of how many users there are of this forum?

Actually I have just realised I know none of the following things:
1 - How many users there are on this site
2 - How many are 'active' regular posters
3 - How many Palace fans there are
4 - What percentage of the usership on this site the number of 'homophobic' comments came from
5 - What percentage of the active users...ditto
6 - Whether this forum is a big enough section with a diverse enough demographic to extrapolate these percentages to the entire fanbase
7 - How these figures compare with other clubs the BBC sampled

I really ought to watch the documentary because I reckon the BBC will have answered those questions as best they can because I've never known them to air any sensationalised sloppy journalism before.

The original thread was about Brighton just after they were promoted...from memory..I then got this private message (below)

Hello,

I am working on a documentary for the BBC about why there are no openly gay professional football players in English football.

We are particularly interested in exploring where the line is between abuse and banter when it comes to football chants.

I have been following your involvement in the thread about the chants used when playing Brighton. I was wondering if you might be available to have a phone conversation about this subject?

We are trying to speak to as many normal football fans as possible and I would greatly appreciate any help with this.

Please feel free to email me on ion@walesandco.com">sion@walesandco.com too.

Sion.

I then started a thread to see if anyone else had received it, and it appears lots started to...almost all of whom hadnt posted anything homophobic to start with.

Consequently it was clear from the start that they were going to use the forum as an example; but we all knew (and posted as such) that it would be effectively a stitch up...without promoting a balanced view...which very much seems to be the case.

It's a shame as I said earlier, as rather than promote the cause it in fact demeans it...certainly from the perspective of the fanbase they're tarring.

On the otherhand its clear that it's ok to use us as collateral damage if it highlights the issue nationwide..again; hypocrisy of the highest order in my view.

It all sounds very strange and a bit sad. Sounds like a complete sting.. and then as if he's had to take half the responses out of context to fit his agenda.

If that's true then I'd say the club have a case and a duty to tackle this head on and raise it with the BBC via legal channels.

The club try's very hard on the LGBT front and for one man and a twisted documentary to bring that in to jeopardy isn't right or fair.

Agreed. What the BBC did was dark at best.

I'm not disagreeing with all of what legaleagle says, we knew what this journo was going to do and gave him some ammo. I do hold both parties responsible though because I think a lot of the blame (not all of it) ought to go to the BBC. Post the same thing on any football club's forum and I reckon the ratio of genuine homophobia : joke homophobia : silly comments : sensible comments would be about the same. Which of those categories you deem acceptable will vary from poster to poster, I'm not debating that, but I am certain that we are no different from any other club there. And if we have been singled out by the BBC then that is poor form even if it isn't illegal.

I appreciate that I made a couple of comments that may have fallen into the "silly comments" category. I don't apologise for that because I do it on every subject under the sun on this forum, not least taking the p*ss out of myself.

of course the additional irony in all of this is that his thread (after the one I mention above) is where a lot of the stuff used came from...so he was effectively creating his own story...very sterotypical

I know football has a bit of an issue when it comes to homophobia but today in the stands and online you get ALL of society. Homophobic people feel emboldened behind online anonymity and whether you go on a football forum or somewhere with no footballing interest you're bound to find those individuals. I don't think the majority of fans would be bothered at all by a gay player or fellow fan.

Gareth Thomas by the sound of things has let himself down by misquoting a few on here but unfortunately I'm sure there were also some horrible things said.

Typical Journo stuff. Expect to be misquoted in this type of investigative reporting. They started with an agenda that they wish prove and sensationalise.

We can't deny that we have the odd homophobe, with a fan base as big as ours it is just statistics, but satire, taking the piss and badly worded posts would always have been taken out of context was / is easy meat to this type of lowest denominator TV.

Genuinely dodgy comments aside, I'll say this:

We now live in a society where people put words in your mouth and then get offended by them. Who is really the offensive party when that happens?

Isn't it ironic that the very people so vehemently opposed against victimization are the worst offenders? The holmesdale.net is hardly a bastion of political influence, yet these thugs come on here, not as supporters of CPFC or PL football, but as politically driven gay activists instilling fear and intimidation. They are 'C-U-N-T-S'.
