Not really answering the OP's question but at the time this was amazing. For the older Palace Fans.

After beginning as an apprentice at Crystal Palace,Steve MacKenzie signed for Manchester City in 1979 for £250,000..

His goal in the '81 cup final replay - the perfect cushioned header set-up from Hutchison and BANG! He was one that got away.

Sean Scanell was never cocky. Quite the opposite. He was lazy with his time keeping but used to get the bus or a cab when playing for us. Knew his Dad at the time he played for Palace who was a nice chap too.

Used to see him around Sutton and Croydon a lot on Friday nights, never looked the cocky type apart from being in a flash motor but who wouldn't be. Come to think of it, what he was doing out on a Friday night?!

Wayne routledge for me - looked unbelievable when coming through and to be fair was good when he made the first team sadly just another one who thought the grass was greener at white hart lane!!

I'd second the comments about Cadogan, Pinney and Djilali, the latter losing out due to attitude problems I believe.

And as many have said, Lee Hills. Did actually make it through as a regular, but then blew his knee. Very sad, especially as a left back! Gold dust.

Aa for one that hasn't been mentioned... Matty Parsons? Think he made his first apprearance in an FA Cup game and stole the show (did he even score? Or perhaps assist?)
Anyway, played a few more games for us afterwards and then disappeared back into obscurity.

Thought David Whyte looked promising and a Left back Jamie Vincent , trying to remember first youth team player I saw play for the first team probably Jim Cannon or Phil Hoadley

Can't say I agree with this. I used to see him around Croydon occasionally and sometimes chat with him at CP Triangle Sainsburys. He was always really affable, if not even more laid-back than me.

I used to go to Youth matches at SP and remember Sean (and quite a few others) coming through and looking the part, but he hasn't really pushed on. Maybe he doesn't feel the necessity and is just comfortable.

Just going on what a friend said, but some peoples perceptions can be wrong, hopefully in this case it was. I do believe Scannell may have been in an intoxicated state when the two of them encountered each other.

Feel bad to say I had almost forgotten about matty pardon! Looked the mutts nuts when he first played. By the same token, thought Jason Benton looked decent for us a few times in pre season, thought he may of had a future but now plying his trade in the lower leagues

I thought Joniesta was definitely going to be better than Wolf, who knows, he might have been had he stayed fit.

Really thought Boeteng looked great when I saw him playing, sadly he hasn't kicked on and, although I suppose there's still time, it doesn't look like he's going to make it.

Bostock looked great too for his age but we all know where that went wrong.

Surely he is?
