And the sooner Frank grasps that, albeit I prefer Zaha on the right and Townsend on the left if Benteke is to get any service via crosses at all, the better I'll like it. We've got to play to our strengths otherwise we're going to be mullered, including by Huddersfield.

Dave, in reality both Wilf and Andros switch during games.
Example our goals at West Brom.
And proof that day that Andros can play anywhere on the left or right side.

With the squad as it is now, then of course continue with Benteke centrally but we're sure to get another striker. Depending on said striker quality, if they are van Persie quality then they should be starting. Playing Benteke wider could let you fit in both plus Zaha on the left AND Townsend on the right side of midfield.

Surely he's playing those who he sees as his starters in the positions they will be played in for the season? Personally I would play Townsend as the wide right forward but FdB didn't play him there.

I don't think FdB is a huge fan of Benteke, CB struggled at Liverpool who tried to play football through the middle, he could have a bit more space in wide areas and he'll certainly have the physical advantage out there.

I see it differently, he plays people in the roll he thinks suit their skills, to allow him to judge where he needs to buy. If we get a RWB, it shows he prefers Townsend further forward or doesn't think he's up to playing deep. Also FdB knows Townsend can play as a RF, so he doesn't learn anything by having him there. In contrast, he's less sure of Anderson or Sako in that position.

We haven't seen enough of FdB Palace team to make any serious judgements on who he prefers where really. Schalke will be the game where we actually see what FdB thinks, up until then it's all speculation.

FdB spoke highly of him, saying he's an important part of his project. You could say he has to say that, but if you question that, then you can't be sure he doesn't fancy him as a player either. Benteke definitely isn't a wide player.

Before people start slagging off the OP they should read this link. There is not enough imagination amongst some of our fans and there is definitely more than one way to score goals especially if we have more than one striker starting and this is what the OP is saying. He would effectively become a 10 rather than a 9 and he would of course still be the main man in the air at set pieces. It is a change to a system that might work, it might not, but it shouldn't be discounted out of hand.

Thank you, I knew someone out there would see what I was getting at. I think most people just imagine Benteke trying to dribble past a full-back and crossing for someone else but that wouldn't be the aim at all.

In theory you can actually maximise his potential in the air, having him force central defenders to think "do I stick or twist" and having small full-backs losing aerial duels with him. For crosses from the left, he will be in the blind spot of the CB's and can get a running jump on them. If we attack down the right then he could hold up the ball on that side, dragging defenders to him, then get Townsend overlapping him or Loftus-Cheek/Cabaye finding pockets of space to run into. Remember you'll already have the central striker in there and then you can overload the box with Benteke running in before the cross comes in.

In particularly the West Brom match Sako (RF) was quite central a lot of the time. At the moment I can see that RF position used quite unorthodoxly anyway.

A number of posts have mentioned "if we have another striker" or "if we have one more striker starting", but we have only one specialist striker and whose trademark is aerial power in the box. Until we get striker number two I would have thought the best place for Benteke is in the box, with Wilf & Andros whipping decent balls in. It's relatively simple and has been shown to work.

My thoughts aren't to stick Benteke on the wing but to find a striker who can play across the front three positions and then let them all switch.

Munri El Haddadi I think would suit this role as he appears comfortable on either side and through the middle.

Townsend Wilf and Benteke could probably play like this from the get go.

I'd be surprised if RVP wouldn't be able to do the same.

Doubt Benteke would be asked to play on the wing for 90mins but im maybe the idea will be for them to regularly switch.

Whichever way Benteke moves, the situation could become even more interesting if Zaha then moves into the centre, and Townsend moving,if neccessary,to the spare position.I have long thought that Zaha would have a role to play as a deep striker, not all the match, but certainly some of it.As most CBs and DMs are slower than a FB,then Wilf may find it more profitable in that position.Should the opposition move a FB into the centre to counteract Wilf, that would leave a weakness on their flank.Should Wilf find himself on the edge of the area with no way through, then he could pass the ball to out wide to Townsend, who could the centre it to the incoming Benteke from the other side.I'm not interested in which position an individual player is suited to;I'm more interested in goals and results.

Yes, adding some unpredictability to how we line up can't be a bad thing under a manager who has such a wealth of experience at the top level. Very different to having Pardew trying to coach these things. Today we have De Boer, Trustfull and Sammy Lee, who know what they're doing.

Wilf has always showed signs that he could play centrally, at the moment I think De Boer just wants to free him of a bit of his tracking back duties and get him on the ball in dangerous areas.

They know what they are doing with years of experience. I am happy to let them sort out the team. Your bizarre theories remind me of the great England success with Heskey on the wing and Harry Kane taking corners.
My advice, stick to your day job.

And Sven played Andrew on the wing.

Which is tactical genius compared to playing Christian there.
