Ok having read all of the comments it looks like the general feeling is that Punch can't play wingback. On the basis he isn't going to take Cabaye or Milivojevic's spot on the park, the only player that can be left out is Townsend. If that is the case we lose a lot of our threat going forward and I just can't see Punch being a full time, every game, starter more particularly as we haven't even taken RLC into account in this equation. So, why has he been picked as captain? Surely your captain is the rock, the first person on the teamsheet and who you want on the field at all times unless injured?

The only position I can see Punch getting into the team believe it or not is at right wing back. Before anyone dies laughing remember that Milner has successfully converted to this role and Punch to me is a better tackler than Townsend and better going forward than Ward, so if he could learn his trade in that position it answers the question of keeping the captain in the team without him taking up either Cabaye's or Luka's position.

Based on current staff the team for me would be:

Hennessey

Punch, Tomkins, Dann, Reidewald, PVA

Cabaye, Milivojevic

Townsend, Benteke, Zaha

Glad we got de boar

Do you actually read anything or just post sarcastic replies to the OP with poor spelling. Try and add something to the debate, it makes for far more interesting reading.

I'm sure he was probably just thinking the same thing, why pick a slow, incredibly left-footed player who has a worrying knack for conceding stupid free kicks, but has shown recently to have a good influence in the centre of the pitch, at right wing back?

Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time.

FdB has appointed him captain after getting to know the squad so he must see things in punch that we don't. If FdB really does think that punch actually does have a role in the new system, that's good news all round. Nobody can doubt his loyalty and commitment to palace

I was impressed with Punch's performance against West Brom, he knows how to feint in the middle of the park, seems to have taken to de Boers new system so far.

Not just FdB either, Allardyce gave him captaincy too. And we all through the sun shone out of his backside.

No offence, didn't have time for a long response.

Harmless humour in my world sarcastic in yours.

So we are all different, but have one thing in common that keeps us all here.

PALACE. The red and blue.

C'est la vie.

How about playing him left back ...... inside the dressing room. Cannot for the life of me see what the managers see in him.

As much as I love the fact he is local, Palace through and through and has played well for us in previous seasons, the fact remains that last year he posed no threat to goal and spurned many opportunities to slip crucial passes in. Yes, the management obviously like him and his attitude is probably fantastic however his performances on the pitch don't reflect that so I'm with you cpj. I am expecting RLC/Cabaye to be an upgrade at Punch's normal position.

Punch remains one of the most underrated players by most of our fans. If you watch him off the ball, watch his positional awareness and his communication then you'll see what he does for the team.
