I'm firmly in the 'we're not ready for 3-4-3' camp but tried imagining a line-up from current resources. WH Tomkins Dann Riedewald Townsend Luka Cabaye PVA Wilf Tekkers Punch
Townsend would bring energy to his flank but, other than getting himself in the way, is a dreadful defender. PVA has so far performed better than I'd expected defensively but is still suspect. he too would bring energy. for punch, he's just not quite at the level (for me) and despite his goalscoring prowess, I struggle to picture Benteke leading a pressing game. bottom line...it might work or it could be a disaster. I lean to the latter but pray I'm wrong. good old palace

Would prefer to keep Townsend for the long term as its a long season, should we need to switch play from time to time! I'd love to keep him, just wonder how he'd take siting on the bench each week. But he'd be fantastic cover for Wilf and as a sub option. Can't see him playing wing back or upfront but I'll be happy to be wrong

Townsend inside left, Wilf inside right. Van der Wiel rwb (if rumours are true) and PVA lwb. Can't see Townsend being the full time rwb as his attacking talent would be wasted.

I don't think we'll be playing 3-4-3 by the end of September. We'll be back to 4-5-1 variant. I agree. I was super nervous watching the players pass up through the middle in the 2 pre-season friendlies. Against better opposition we would be in trouble. I think it builds good passing ability, but can't see us sticking with it, especially for games against the big 7.

The only position I can see Punch getting into the team believe it or not is at right wing back. Before anyone dies laughing remember that Milner has successfully converted to this role and Punch to me is a better tackler than Townsend and better going forward than Ward, so if he could learn his trade in that position it answers the question of keeping the captain in the team without him taking up either Cabaye's or Luka's position. Based on current staff the team for me would be: Hennessey Punch, Tomkins, Dann, Reidewald, PVA Cabaye, Milivojevic Townsend, Benteke, Zaha
