I once saw them perform at the Fairfield Halls (Croydon) in early 1969. On the support bill was David Bowie - not singing but as a mime artist! Wow! I never saw it, but Bowie drew much acclaim for performing as John Merrick drawing largely on his mime ability.

Although the lyrics quote the bird is the word throughout, in the original by the Trashmen it occasionally sounds to me like the bird is a winner. Good omen perhaps ... Or maybe just wishful thinking.
