Smalling doesn't fit the ball playing defender type that we seem to be going for. As a defender he's ok but i'd have both Chambers and Sakho over him.

Pretty divided opinion of him before we signed him.

But, of course i just made all of that up to suit my point of view...

I would estimate that there were ten positive posts about signing him to every negative one and as I have nothing better to do this afternoon I have been through all 15 pages and listed below all the negative posts in order to embarrass the posters

Petereagle

Turns out he has a dismal track record on fitness diet and attitude. Stay well clear I say, talented player but....

Baldfella

No ta want the ex Juve player please!

Y Ddraig Goch

He is a bloody nightmare

Paperhat

"unsure about joining a club in a relegation struggle"
equals
give up after 2 defeats.

Eagles911

Leave well alone IMO he's not even a great player, so prone to making mistakes and if we get him I think it will be a big mistake on our part!

Hrolf The Ganger

Not sure why we need this guy. Is Sam going to play with three center halves?

OknotOK

£20m? For a player who Liverpool have said won't play for them again and who hasn't played a single minute of competitive league football for over 6 months?
And then after that to have to pay him >£105k a week (presumably the same for a loan deal)?
Doesn't sound like something we'll be doing this window.

Mstrobez

Sako for 20mil would be insanity. Looks like he's gonna fall over every time he gets the ball, very rash, agreed he looks like there is potential but right now he is not what we need and especially not for a sum of 20 mil.

Mstrobez

Liverpool have supposedly been terrible at the back all season, why can't he get in? Even when Matip is unavailable?
Not saying I haven't seen glimpses, or he couldn't be a success with coaching but not for 20mil - that would be utter madness.

Bexley Eagle

Total madness to buy a potentially disruptive influence or someone high maintenance for £20 mil. Just bonkers.

Mstrobez

Whatever the circumstances, I agree with everyone saying loan with buy option is the best way to go.. 20 Million would be an absolutely huge risk and an absurd amount to just spend on a player who looks shaky every time he plays, did well in Europa league last season and as I've said there is definitely a player there but has a lot of work to do and looks shaky everytime the ball comes to him in the games I've watched.. IMO we need something a lot more reliable if we're to spend that type of money in the predicament we're in

Matteo

Any team paying 20 million for a center back is in the wrong.
Buying Sakho for 20 million is just silly, even for Premier League prices.

Gyro1780 – ( this one is just for a laugh)

He won't be £20m in the summer. January's prices are always higher. I'm guessing will be somewhere around £12m-£15m

I guess it is all a question of value for money. All 3 players appear to be acceptable to RdB so cost against resale, versatility ,wage demands ,age ,fitness record ,character etc. will all come into the decision making process. For me on balance I would go for Chambers.

He is still young and English, suits fdb's style of play and can be mounded, he's a mint player for England and will have a point to prove. I think we may regret not getting him, even if it is for just a few mil less than our hero of last season, sakho.

Is the right answer...he's the future not the present. What's the point of FdB and Parish saying they want to sign Young Hungry players at the right price only to ignore all that on one player.

Part of me thinks SP is happy to piss the scousers about on this one; knowing full well he has back ups on the table.

The bin dippers are trying to play hard ball and stitching themselves up in the process...8 games doesnt make a player, but you compare his wage demands with that of Chambers and £20m for Chambers would look far more appealing....should we get him, of course.

As long as he's not after an Old Hungary player, I think Kiraly is still available.

Personally I would bend the rule on the age of Sakho purely because I saw what Mamadou did to the whole squad in those 8 games. And the Palace crowd.

Watch him against Chelsea.

Unlike yourself I do not know the wage demands of either player.

To be honest I do not know much about Chambers, apparently he is a good RWB and can play Centre Half.
But has failed to secure a place in Arsenals first 11.

As normal I will leave it to Frank.

Chambers was a really exciting prospect when at Southampton...only to them be consumed into an Arsenal side that was doing well at the age of 16...stunting his development. Arsenal pay notoriously low wages, much like Spuds for their squad players...only a handful earn more than £100k which is what we were paying for Sakho and what he was wanting to make the move...even if we've managed to negotiate him down...it'll still be nowhere near the £40k per week region we'd pay Chambers..as I say...8 games isn't enough in my eyes to warrant it...esp as he's not yet fully fit.

Hennessy was a far bigger influence in the Chelski game, which says pretty much everything about that result. We were battered for 85mins and somehow came out of it on top
