Some really good points made on this thread on these lines, and I agree with the above. The NHS is in crisis, and it's turned into some political pawn where people look at funding etc. But part of the reason is because us as a society have abused it. We just accept that obesity affects huge parts of society, and the cost to the NHS is enormous. Fully agree that sweets, sugary drinks etc should contribute towards the funding. And then there's the number of gp appointments that get missed - the medium sized practice (6 partners) near where I live regularly has 25+ hours of appointments missed. How much does that cost? People who miss appointments should be charged £10 or £15 or whatever it costs when they have their next one or they don't have that appointment.

Just got to think how lucky we are even with a run down NHS. Look at our cousins across the Atlantic.

Processed shyte and sugary food will make you fat because it's already been broken down so the stomach doesn't have to work. So after that 2 rows of Cadbury's that were easy to chomp down, down goes another few rows, and another. If you've watched that series called 'Secret Eaters' you'll see how people try and claim they eat well but don't, because the good stuff is added to with cr&p. I am not disputing eating s*** loads of chocolate isn't good for you, I am saying we eat too much. Yes in that I include lots of "nice" treats like biscuits, chocolates, crisps etc. But to demonise one Macro-nutrient is a mistake. To try and tax foods (as my original post was a reply to) containing high sugar or high fat is not the way to do it. There is an argument that we have become so used to sugar in everything because of years of eating low fat food. Yes low in fat but high in sugar. It seems a lot of people have forgotten, or have never learned how to cook. Everyone wants the easy option, even that curly haired squeaky voiced prat says eat more and exercise less. It's bulls***

It's bulls*** If people cut out the biscuits, crisps, chocolate, chocolate mousses, pastries etc they wouldn't be either fat or as fat. You don't see many fat free of those items but they're all holding spoons of sugar. Sure there are jars of sweet and sour sauce holding loads of sugar but you can bet your life if they're eating that they're eating loads of unnecessary cr&p during the day and after dinner without a care. It's got worse since its been so cheap in multipacks at the supermarket rather than having to go to the sweet shop and seeing how much it costs. So maybe charging more at the supermarket is the answer.

There is also, sadly, a lot of truth in this. Speak to anyone that works in the NHS and they will be able to tell you about the inefficiency they see on a daily basis. Like any big company I guess
It's definitely a clash of cultures between the front line staff are there for vocational reasons (i.e. wanting to help people no matter how its done) and those trying to stop the front line hemorrhaging money because all they want to do is deal with someones ailment at whatever cost to the system... Working in social care i see this day in day out as well...staff do not record anything properly...having said that they're not helped by lack of training as well as systems that need updating...but nevertheless even with what they have getting it into their head that if they took care in what they recorded i'd be able to build better cases for them to receive more money for staff etc as i can prove the work being done, but they simply dont care, instead seeing me a s a bean counter, without realising its their beans i'm counting. Data quality is a massive issue for the Health 'system' as a whole...no one can say hand on heart what they're dealing with day in day out other than anecdotally...and its the data that the government uses (whoever is in power) to make these decisions.

Will it happen, I doubt it. It wouldn't be such a bad thing, if it was run as a business, it would be far more cost effective. There are far to many people on inflated salaries doing nothing productive at all, just creating work to validate their job, this doesn't include medical staff, just the raft of pen pushers.

I'd say tax cuts. Everyone is poised to benefit from a well funded NHS, even if it costs us more in NI and Tax. A well organised, funded NHS would also save people in private health care, as well as companies that provide Private Health Care as a bonus. Problem is, everyone wants to turn health care into a political issue, rather than a pragmatic one.
