I did think yesterday when I read that 180 HMRC officers had been deployed to target £5m in avoided tax that it was a bit overkill and those officers would be better placed chasing up big corporate avoidance

I'm not posh enough to listen to Radio 4 but on the more downmarket Radio 5 they had someone on who said that one of the problems with the "image rights" scam is that many of the footballers who set up offshore companies to receive the payments for image rights weren't that well known and probably didn't have much genuine income relating to their image rights making it just a tax fiddle
