But the majority do not need the help, so why focus £2b of income where it is not needed? There is not that great a stigma to FSM. I think you have a point about where the funding is being directed here. I'm more just against the concepts behind the private system in the first place.

It's related yes, but not really relevant. You can be for the abolition of private schools and still think this policy is pure garbage. It doesn't actually improve the education of one single child, does it? It's gesturing, plain and simple. Edited by We are goin up! (06 Apr 2017 2.11pm) Maybe you have a point there.

Privatise the education system with government funded vouchers given to families based on their household income. Competition for standards and everyone has equal access to the system. Would be worth it for the NUT's reaction alone.

I have nothing against taxing Private Schools as they could probably afford it although a few would probably close but I would rather see any money spent on other things such as literacy/numeracy programs or holiday or after school provision. FSM for all is such a cheap shallow people pleaser.

Personally I would ban the private education system. In the same way we ban private armies or private fire services. Private systems are divisive and produce and encourage elites....who then suck up the best within society just for themselves and their kids. Government should be run for the many not the few. We should encourage meritocracy not elitism. I agree, but meritocracy leads to what we have now. That is the bind. Those that succeed make the rules. What is the point of doing well in education if it has no meaning full advantage? Those that have money want their kids to well and so it goes.

Would be worth it for the NUT's reaction alone. The teacher unions are full of lefty idealogs who I rarely agree with. But when it comes to equality of opportunity for children....I tend to agree with them. In terms of the state, all children should start off with a clean slate and be treated equality.

Yeah because fried food every weekday lunchtime really promotes good health. “This is a welcome move which we have long campaigned for. The evidence on the benefits for children of extending school meals is very strong. It shows children’s school results are boosted, their diet improves and parents in food poverty have more to spend on nutritious breakfast and dinners for their kids. What’s more, free school meals save families much-needed money and strengthen work incentives, helping parents get better off through work. “The minority of children currently on free school meals tell us they feel stigmatised; extending entitlement should reduce, if not eliminate, that problem. If the concern is the well-being of children in just-managing families, the case for extending entitlement is a compelling one.” Child Poverty Action Group Chief Executive Alison Garnham

Those that have money want their kids to well and so it goes. So are you saying that if you are working class and you do well in education that you have access to the same opportunities that rich kids in private schools have? I don't believe that is the case at all. None of the statistics back that up for example. People talk about meritocracy but within society the reality is very different. I don't think you could entirely ban private education but you could certainly make it more difficult and not state supported. Edited by Stirlingsays (06 Apr 2017 2.42pm)
