Perhaps they should restrict themselves to costume dramas, they are very good at that, and scrap their 'news' reporting. And replace them with what? The point about the license fee is to keep it relatively uncontaminated by advertisers, political agendas and other vested interests. It's not perfect, but if you want a reliable source of news there's nothing better on the planet. For David Attenborough alone I'd be happy to pay the fee, let alone the rest of it.

Mrs Brown's Boys, Miranda Hart, Josh Widdicombe, Russell Howard, Bake Off, EastEnders, Strictly and all the other bland bollocks - all of it anodyne, cheap crap designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator. You missed Bargain Hunt and it's spin offs which seem to be on whenever I switch the TV on

When those on the far left moan it's bias to the right and the far right moan it's bias to the left,it's probably doing something right, also if you didn't have it the truth would be available to the highest bidder.

another non-news story makes the BBC headlines. just how low can the BBC go ? (incidentally, do not search the web for BBC, else you are likely to see some over 18 images) Edited by Forest Hillbilly (15 Mar 2017 8.21am)

News is OK, although slightly dubious that they are allowing their Remain leanings to cloud their EU coverage at the moment. Hopefully that will settle. Love their documentaries / history / nature output. Radio 4 is my channel of choice, I understand Radio 3 is good if you like that sort of thing (I don't so I talk from ignorance) I think they should concentrate on what they are good at, and leave things like pop music to other channels. Their comedies have been poor since Only Fools and Horses stopped, sadly. Personally I think they should trim down quantity in favour of quality, but they are pretty good.

Actually Neil, you make a really good point. I watched the third and final part of the 1066 documentary/dramatisation twice last night. The BBC at its finest,.....and yet the 'news' is shlt

Can’t even remember the last time I saw a copy of the Express, some years ago I think. Strange how it is the left who always spring to the defence of the liberal-left BBC, I wonder why that is. World Service a ‘national treasure’, LOL. If this institution is so wonderful, why does it have to be funded by the public (many of whom disagree with the constant liberal-left lines that it takes). Surely, if it is so great, it would succeed as a business. Edited by hedgehog50 (14 Mar 2017 4.04pm) No, the response you get from me is that I criticised your comment; and I am not left wing. I imagine some of my opinions are far right of yours. I criticised your left leaning bias piffle because it is piffle.

The BBC website seems, to me at least, to be a tad patronising. News and other items seem to be written in such a way as to be aimed at 12 year olds. Similarly, the TV news reporting comes across as rather more superficial than I remember it some years ago. I guess they don't know who or what their demographic is. In terms of light entertainment, it really has gone down the sh*tter. Mrs Brown's Boys, Miranda Hart, Josh Widdicombe, Russell Howard, Bake Off, EastEnders, Strictly and all the other bland bollocks - all of it anodyne, cheap crap designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator. BUT We have BBC4, almost all its radio output, documentaries, natural history, (some) high quality drama, University Challenge and Only Connect. In summary, although the news and politics coverage is rather bland and unchallenging (and perhaps not as subjective as it once had a reputation for being) and the light entertainment is embarrassing or just piss-poor, as a public service broadcaster and for what it manages to achieve, it does a remarkable job. As Kermie rightly pointed out, compare it with the quality of tv and radio in other countries and it really is something special and is, indeed, almost globally envied. I'll keep it as it is, thanks. I am not sure I remember you using that many words in a response CF. The dumbing down of the news sadly reflects the needs of the bite size download generation. Watch Newsnight if you want a bit more insight.

Just seen episode 1 of the second series of The Last Kingdom on BBC2. If you haven't caught up season 1 is on Netflix. It's sick. Well worth a watch and proves that BBC can slog it with the big boys of TV. I will add that Band of Brothers was another BBC/HBO joint venture that is still one of the greatest miniseries of all time. Newswise it's still the best source of news in this country by far on the whole but no service will be completely free of any sort of bias because the people who run it are not robots.
