Pointing out something bad in itself isn't virtue signalling, it's pointing out something bad. Yes there are those that , as Melanie philips pointed out on the show what this thread referred to, that go out of their way to be seen to be do gooders. However in the context of an internet forum political discussion the term is used only to shut down debate without responding to the point (which would be the useful way to proceed) and negate a response. Simply put. There are those that back their words with actions and those who's words are designed for effect, to gain advantage or create an impression. Even those who do rather than just talk are ultimately doing for themselves out of some misguided guilt or need to satisfy their nurturing tendencies. That seems to drive people to forever be worrying about complete strangers and the like, or to think they can save the world. It is a conceit at worst and naivety at best, but not as bad as forever wanting purely to be seen to be as virtuous.

I think hypocrisy is the natural state of people. However, you can still be correct in a belief, even if you do not adhere to it. Now I think if you do the complete opposite, your integrity is called into question, but it doesn't mean that something you said is devoid of value or meaning. That's dangerous reasoning, which ends up with the idea that someone who's rich cannot have views of value about the poor (irrespective of whether their views make sense). Yeah it's almost as if men can't say anything negative about minorities or women in the public area. That state of ridiculous affairs is so often complained about by the left isn't it.... I'll be bothered about the negative impact of calling out virtue signalling when more people on the left also wake up to the negatives arising from their own labels and politically correct behaviours.

And what would they be? Too numerous to mention, but one topical example would be calling for open door immigration but not being willing to take in a immigrant yourself. 'Oh but my practical situation isn't comparable to the country's'....yeah right....This country is on its knees...If they want to weaken it some more they should also be willing to weaken themselves.

I don't support anything that closes down non violent debate, touchy subjects or not. Also I don't believe you do either. But come on...it's somewhat ironic that an actor on the left is complaining about the other side trying to close down debate by using negative name calling. I've never seen you complaining about the left doing it. Personally I don't want to censor somebody when I see virtue signalling I just want to criticise them......We all do things that deserve criticism from time to time.
