I was so annoyed with myself for not spotting the lower speed limit sign that I didn't spot another camera just 100 yards from the first and got flashed again. Fortunately I only received one ticket but it could easily have been two and I am well aware that the main reason that I have had a clean licence ever since then is more down to luck than judgement

But hey, thanks for being as patronising as those I thought I'd encounter!! Surely these courses SHOULD be aimed at the idiots who do silly speeds on motorways and outside schools, not someone who does 60/70,000 miles a year and is flashes the occasional speed camera just over the limit? I don't know it all, but with 36 years driving experience with the above mileage every year for the last 20 I don't need to be told that 'speed kills' I'm experienced enough to know!! Maybe I would learn something and if it was good for you, then fine, but I won't be bothering unless I'm on 9 points, which at the moment is exactly 9 points away so I must be doing something right I guess.

Evidently they are very 'Hot' about speeding in Australia.Unmarked cars patrol and all of a sudden a driver will see a car in front flashing a sign with words to the effect "Pull over - you have been caught driving over the limit".Someone I know who lives in Australia was fascinated by the fact that we had 'Speed cameras' warning signs on our roads before actual yellow boxes - he said there were no such warnings in Australia.

He got caught speeding just after and has been offered the same course. He has decided against doing the course as he said it was a waste of a days holiday and a complete waste of time. So has gone for the points and fine this time around.

He has decided against doing the course as he said it was a waste of a days holiday and a complete waste of time. So has gone for the points and fine this time around. that's a shame as the course really is an eye opener. anyone who's doing 100mph in a 70 zone (or similar levels over the set limit) knows they are doing it so is effectively choosing to break the limit . Those marginally over whatever limit it is may be doing so through a lack of concentration/knowledge etc. What the course tells/reminds you is how to 'know' what the limit is whether there are signs up or not by the type of road - dual carriageway/lit road/unlit roads etc, how to know where 20/30mph zones are etc. Its all stuff that was in the highway code when we learnt to drive or more importantly, has been added since. It focuses a lot on stopping distances at various speeds and how greatly the extend at only a small increase in the amount of speed. At 30mph, slamming the brakes on , you stop at point X. At 40mph and slamming the brakes on, you are still doing Y miles per hour at point X, that sort of thing. It also focuses on the word 'limit'. It doesn't mean get to that speed and stay there. Things that some people take for granted, road conditions, traffic flow, weather etc but also the areas and time of day you are driving. It may be a 60mph limit but it also might not be safe to drive at that speed there. I ,and it seems those who have also done it, can confirm that it has certainly changed how I look at driving, especially in built up areas. Edited by paperhat (09 Mar 2017 11.45am)

It's meant to be for those caught marginally speeding. I think for 70mph roads it was 85mph and above and the course wasn't offered. So presumably you were going too fast in each instance to be entitled to do the course. Someone on my course had been caught doing 32 in a 30 zone and were furious about it (but does put to bed the myth that you are automatically allowed limit+10%+1mph. Typically you will get away with that but there is nothing in law)

Where I work on the Brighton Road, There has been a fairly high profile police presence for 2 weeks and yet not a day has gone by yet where we haven't seen at least 4/5 people getting pulled using their phones. Everyone thinks they will get away with it, they wont get caught etc.

My understanding is- Typically car speedos are calibrated +10%. So if you get caught doing 33mph your speedo will be reading over 36. Police know this, and assume you thought you were breaking the limit by more than just the 3mph.

I have never been done, but I think getting done is as easy as getting booked for diving when blatantly tripped in the box whilst wearing a Palace shirt. A lady I worked with was giving me a lift back to my hotel in Chester one night whilst the city was festooned with roadworks and diversions. We got lost as a result. After a little while of navigating through the side streets and trying to find our way we came out near the ring road, started going the wrong way, turned round and instead of being on the ring road we were on the A57 into the city which is where the second most lucrative speed camera in the country is situated. Since the driver thought she was on the ring road she ran past the camera before realising it wasn't that road and it went off. I might easily have done the same had I been driving. Since this was in England the course was available; in Scotland, there is no such thing and you are stuck with £100 fine and three points. See Pistonheads' plod and the law forum for further advice.
